Dashe Dry Creek Zinfandel 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight, shiny and black fruited on the nose with reticent buttered herb and inky, blue fruit aromas emerging from the glass. This is dark and muscular, rich with a balsamic framed core of black cherry and red currant fruit that already shows incredible purity. Already quite polished in the mouth this has lovey acids and some slightly chewy yet ripe tannins that drive the long, tight big black cherry juice flavors on the long finish. This is very young but already shows such brightness and vivid flavors. 92pts

Tight, earthy and pure on the nose with beautiful spice notes, a little peppery and licorice, and a gently smoky note adding savory detail to the core of cherry fruit. There’s almost a candied herb thing going on here. Light easy going, and all raspberry and strawberry fruit on entry supported by soft tannins and juicy acids lending this a silky smooth mouthfeel. Not a powerhouse, just supple and fresh Zinfandel with lovely spice notes on the moderately long finish. 90pts

50 yo vines in Geyserville Deep, earthy, and sharply mineral on the nose with crushed toasty black currant fruit, black raspberry fruit accented by notes of graham cracker and a little peppery spice. Deep and earthy in the mouth as well with real richness but a lean and firm character supported by super ripe tannins and fine, bright acidity. Upright in the mouth and structured like a skyscraper with lovely Zin berry fruit framed with brambly accents. Structured and powerful but superbly balance, with the structural framework just wrapped up in clear black cherry and black raspberry fruit. Unusual to find a wine with such height and breadth, yet one that is transparent in the mouth. 94pts

Lots of blackberry fruit here along with floral tones and a decidedly herbal, spicy green top note. There is very nicely used wood here adding a floor of vanilla and butterscotch to the bouquet. Smooth, creamy, almost medium-bodied but rather chewy at the same time, this is not a bruiser but is rather well packed with stuff. The fruit is a bit darker on the palate showing some boysenberry and liquory cherry notes along with some gentle gingerbread spice, all wrapped up in slightly firm and drying tannins and underlain by good, juicy acidity. The finish is moderately long and a bit tannic today with some spicy wood notes, but the fruit powers through it all, popping on the finale with juicy wild cherry notes. This needs time to settle down, give it 12-18 months. 90pts

A little nutty on the nose and somewhat compressed, with wooly fruit and earthy yeast notes. Wow—this shows some super-refined tannins, and while this is a little dense it remains elegant and balanced, with a hint of orange peel and baking spice accenting the high-toned, almost boyseneberry fruit that extends over the long finish. 91 points

Very easy drinking Zinfandel. Lots of tart raspberry and cherry on the tip of the tongue. Some "saltiness" (?) also, but it diminishes. Some mushroomy things. Medium-bodied, light for a Zin. Looking forward to having this with grilled chicken breasts, tonight. US$18.95 at NapaCabs in Chino Hills.

Nice acidity and balanced well with the flavors and tannins. Gorgeous dark berry fruits, tart black berry and raspberry. Enjoyable even to drink on its own.

Outstanding compared to its peers in this price range. Well worth ordering by the case from Dashe.

Color: Black-purple Aromas: Black raspberry, black cherry, hints of plum, chocolate, with an underlying floral component of violets Taste: Sweet black raspberry, pomegranate, plum, hints of chocolate and licorice. One of the most balanced and lovely-textured Dry Creek Zinfandels we’ve made, with dark chocolate and black pepper spice underlying the velvety, intense midpalate and the long, sweet red-fruit finish

PRODUCTION: 2014 was one of a string of large, high-quality vintages in California. We used our custom-made gridded tanks to ferment, allowing us to submerge the cap of grape skins beneath the surface of the fermenting wine, extracting color, body, and complexity from the grapes without extracting drying tannins found in the seeds. The result is an intense and complex wine that also feels very velvety and round on the tongue. The wine was fermented using only the natural yeast population on the grapes—our tradition at Dashe Cellars—and the resulting wine shows off the terroir of the vineyards beautifully. The wine was aged for 10 months in older French oak barrels, including our 900 gallon French oak casks that allow us to gain the softness of oak aging without adding excessive oak flavors. In our blending trials, we added about 5% of Petite Sirah, for structure and aging potential. TASTING NOTES: Color: Black-purple Aromas: Black raspberry, cherry kirsch, and chocolate overtones, with an underlying floral component of lavender and violets. Taste: Sweet black cherry, black raspberry, and hints of chocolate and licorice. One of the most intense Dry Creek zinfandels we've made, with dark chocolate and black pepper spice underlying the higher toned fruits. Alcohol: 14.3% by vol.

Bright, full red. Black raspberry, spices and black pepper are lifted by a floral note on the nose. Nicely delineated flavors of dark berries, pepper and spices display good cut and intensity and a welcome touch of sweetness. A bit unforgiving today, finishing with firm, dusty tannins and good spicy, chocolatey length. I’d give this another year in bottle before pulling the cork.

From a great vintage, the 2012 Zinfandel Dry Creek boasts a dark ruby color, a big, projected nose of berry fruit, spice, pepper and flowers, and abundant character, Enjoy this sleeper of the vintage over the next several years.
