Darmagi Gaja 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2011 Darmagi delivers loads of varietal character with tangy aromas of wild sage and rosemary oil followed by extra dark color and saturation. There’s a deep sense of richness here that will carry this elegant wine forward throughout the years. Black cherry and chocolate fill the rear...94"WA 7/14

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Nice dark ruby red looking thick and full bodied in the glass. Takes a bit of wristy swirling to open up, be patient, a wonderful nose of spices, sugar, plums and dark fruits. A little herbaceous and hot too. Fat and bold on the mouth feel, a little oaky at the end but a very pleasant tasting experience, not too much fruit on the palate, needs a few more years. 2012 and on is my guess. 91 Points

Very dark purple, close to black but beginning to lighten with age, this Darmagi is my favourite ever produced from a super vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon with 4% Cabernet Franc this comes forth in the nose of blackcurrents and oak mixed with tobacco and vanilla. It's on the palate where this wine really show's quality with a kinder acidity and well balanced tannins. Full bodied and lustrous with a long and fruity finish. Needs another 5 years to be at its best.

Weingut: Angelo GajaRegion:    PiemontRebsorten: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet FrancInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 14,5 Vol.%Lagerfähigkeit: 7 - 10 Jahre ab JahrgangFassreife: in Barriques gereift (6 Monate) Suche nach Rebsorten > Rote Rebsorten > Cabernet Sauvignon

Superclean with raspberry plum and cedar aromas and flavors. Just a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied with silky tannins and a long caressing finish. Very fine indeed. Stylish. Best after 2008. 2800 cases made. JS Wine Spectator 93 points Oct 31 2005.

Color: Intense, deep red, almost black. Aroma: Opulent layers of concentrated fruit. Taste: Though very Cabernet in character, Darmagi owes its distinctive, austere personality to the unique terroir of Barbaresco. Excellent fruit with strong cassis flavors and impressive power on the palate carry through to the long finish with persistent soft tannins. Great aging potential.
