D'Arenberg the Stump Jump Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre Mclaren Vale 2011
Very pretty on the nose, peppery and ripe with smoke, dried meat and vanilla accents. This is rich but very well balanced in the mouth, showing fine blackberry, tinged with hints of game, black currant and fried bacon. The tannins are very soft lending this an easy drinking quality and the rich fruit pops on the back end before fading gently on the dry, austerely refreshing finish. This wants a steak. Very nicely done. 87 ptsAdd winemaker's notes

Stemmy and perfumy on the nose with soil tones, green fennel and cardamom seeds, a touch of volatility, and some plummy sweetness. Has a leading edge of woody sweetness that then turns to a rather broad pool of sweet peach toned strawberry and cherry fruit with some dry austere tannins adding cut and refreshing the very strawberry fruited finish. This is a bit loose, with nice fruit flavors in an easy drinking style that finishes a bit short and dry though with nice persistence to the licorice and strawberry fruit 84pts
Spicy on the nose with a bit of black spice and pepper over slightly roasted fruits and a hint of BO funk. This is fairly complex in the mouth, showing very well integrated wood tones, lightly jammy wild black fruits, and a nice spice note. Though the flavors turn a little roasted in the glass it's firmly medium bodied with good depth of flavor, and fine acids and soft tannins making it easy to drink and surprisingly food friendly. Air brings out more red fruit in the glass, and adds an appealing smoothness. Really a very nice glass of wine and the perfect thing for a backyard BBQ. 88pts
Faint and reticent at first, lots of alcohol but with sufficient strawberry, herb, white pepper, blue flower and a touch of metal notes to keep this moderately interesting. A bit sweet right up front but with lots of acid keeping this lighter bodied balanced and really fresh with estery fruitiness, red fruits, strawberry/raspberry/grape, herbal top notes, touch of earth, underbrush and vanilla on the finish. A bit hot but still easy to drink, very fruity finish but hot 86pts
Somewhat restrained nose with lots of spice and pepper, leather, game/charred meat, some element of freshness. Lots of going on for a wine at this price point. More fruit forward on the palate with lots of plum fruit and more spice. Some dry salty minerality. Very bright with lots of acid and moderately long length. Maybe just a touch hot. Great value.
A very pure expression of this popular wine. All three varieties play an important role in the wine’s overall perception. The Shiraz offers dark plum fruits, mulberries and licorice with plenty of concentration, depth and velvety tannin. The Grenache adds a lovely lusciousness to the wine with raspberry, blueberry and floral notes adding prettiness. Both of the afore mentioned varieties also give a little white pepper character which has been accentuated in the cooler vintage and really acts as a point of interest. Finally, the Mourvedre provides a perception of elegance and restraint through its lovely line of lovely red fruits with a hint of dried herb and importantly, a fine chalky tannin that carries all these characters to a long and wonderfully moreish finish. - The Winery
Having not tried it for 8 or 9 years I was amazed that the "fruit bomb" I expected was a coarse dry spicy attempt to mimic a Rhone wine with the same grape composition and it has fallen flat. The high alcohol content has not changed and may be its only saving grace.
Figs and nuts in the aroma, toasted almonds. A little bit of dry grass. The mouth is pointed and acidic, with a nice red fruit tartness on the finish, which is also quite a bit peppery.
Always really enjoyable every time and of a great value.
Nice Rhone style blend; great price.

A terrific value for current consumption, the 2011 Stump Jump GSM blends 46% Grenache, 39% Shiraz and 15% Mourvèdre into a plump yet firm wine that combines black cherry fruit with savory notes of chocolate, herbs and roasted meat. There’s even a touch of mocha on the long finish.
Vivid ruby. High-pitched, peppery aromas of redcurrant and cherry pit, with a smoky overtone. Bright and energetic on the palate, offering sharply focused red fruit, licorice and bitter chocolate flavors, plus a hint of candied rose. Closes with firm cut and good, spicy persistence, on a lingering note of anise.
Fresh and crisp, with a distinct mineral note weaving through the juicy plum and spice flavors, lingering pleasantly on the refined finish. Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. Drink now.
