Editorial Reviews for D'Arenberg Shiraz Mclaren Vale the Dead Arm
A bit dirty on the nose at first but the aromas really build, adding wild berry fruits, meaty accents, spice tones that recall candied violets and hung game with a touch of a terpene accent. In the mouth this is lovely, bright yet deep with a raw freshness to the wine. The fruit is pure and transparent, if a bit evolved, and the finish is long and succulent. 92pts
Opens with a big black pepper, black plum and oak driven nose which is followed by meaty, grilled meat, rare meat tone and top notes of violets, spice, mushroom, tar, gunpowder and a fruity baked spiced apple note. Rich and very finely balanced in the mouth with good acid and modest tannins yielding a slightly chewy, slightly spicy, very bright and slightly astringent blackberry and black plum core of fruit. Gains earthy hints on the edges, which recall fudge, and pops on the finish with distinct pepper, Asian spice, and vanilla accents. Complex and fun to drink 93pts

Really dry strong in flavour, acidic, but good depth! Great wine to enjoy! Bit pricey thou...
Dark and exotic, this seemed to have lots of breed, even a touch of a high end Cab/Shiraz blend going on. Wonderful dark cassis and kirsch, black cherries and scorched earth made this the real winner of the night. Lots of structure and pizzazz with the long smooth finish you would hope for. What a surprise when unveiled. It reminded me of Brokenwood’s Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (5x the price). Well done! QPR Indeed. 94/100
This is a big time shiraz. BIG TIME. I was in Aussie for a year and even got a chance to go visit D'Arenberg. They ended up being my favorite winery in Australia they make every mix of wine you can imagine pulling grapes from different regions to hit good price points. You can even get there lower-end Shiraz "the stump jump" and it carries big flavour and is still smooth. The Dead Arm, on the other hand, is their signature bottle and leaves nothing back. A gulp of this stuff leaves you leaning back in your chair and contemplating how life can be so damn beautiful in your mouth!
Agree agree, one the best shiraz out there, the hint of vanilla is a joy everytime i open a bottle. And an absolut steal at the price! Enjoy

Rich, full-flavored Shiraz sourced from late-19th-century vines in the heart of South Australia's McLaren Vale. Marvelous texture with plum, blackcurrant, and blueberry flavors paving the way to a long, rewarding finish.
The nose is a concentrated and deep expression of licorice, black pepper and spice with dark cherry notes underneath. On the palate, the flavors are rich yet restrained, powerfully intense yet attenuated by acidity. Rich blackberry and cherry flavors... Chuck Hayward. The Dead Arm rarely fails to deliver an uncompromising essay on McLaren fruit; deeply concentrated with levels of dark chocolate, blackberry, nuances of florals and a freshness that belies its weight and power. Good value. Screwcap. Rating 95 Drink ... James Halliday. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2006 d'Arenberg The Dead Arm 750ml
D Arenberg s flagship is the 2006 The Dead Arm Shiraz. Opaque purple-colored, the nose is reticent but gives up aromas of meat, bacon, game, truffles, blueberry, and blackberry. Firm, layered, and complex, this beautifully rendered Shiraz demands a decade of cellaring. It will be superb from 2018 to 2036. D Arenberg has been owned and operated by the Osborn family since its inception in 1912. The portfolio, with a focus on the Rhone varieties, is wide ranging and value-oriented from top to bottom. The winery produces a bevy of value priced reds and whites that were reviewed in Issue 178. They should not be overlooked. At the higher end of the portfolio there is one white wine on which to report.

Winemaker's Notes:
A very dark, vibrant, polished appearance with a dense red crimson hue. The aroma upon opening is surprisingly elegant showing superb fruit characters dominated with red fruits, plum, spices, red cherries, cranberry, white and green pepper and blueberry notes against a back drop of very fine oak. The flavours are ripe; red fruits, cherries, plums and black olives with edges of dried garden herbs. As the wine opens the palate is extremely tight and controlled. In many ways this wine is more elegant than previous vintages with tannins that have a wonderful mineral grittiness that is balanced right to the wine’s pointed finish.
