What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Chester's Tasting Notes:

Upon release d’Arenberg’s The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier has a vivid dark purple colour. The Viognier adds fragrance and the perfume of flowers, nectarines, ginger and herbs, serving to enhance the very ripe spectrum of the Shiraz, namely blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry.

These same characters are also evident on the palate and prevail with a smooth glycerol impact, following through to the mid palate with fruity tannin.. The structure has an accent on fine structure and a gritty long fruit tannin.

After time read more...in bottle the d’Arenberg’s Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier’s flavours should intensify as with other wines from the d’Arenberg stable.

The restrained tannin and acidity will produce a seamless velvety rolling length with age.

Serving and Cellaring Suggestions:

Serve at room temperature 16 – 24 ?C. now or cellar for the next 3-15 years with many types of food, especially hearty stews, rich pasta dishes, roasted and grilled meats including poultry and other white meats, also serves well with slightly hot or spicy dishes and with hard pressed cheeses. Also duck, lamb, beef, kangaroo and also good with dishes served with sauces consisting of rosemary, basil and other herbs or berries. Serve after decanting as an older wine.    (hide)
