D'Arenberg d'Arrys Original Shiraz/Grenache 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is named in honour of d’Arenberg principal, d’Arry Osborn, who is a Wine-makers Federation of Australia Patron and recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia. The d’Arry’s Original blend of Shiraz and Grenache was first launched in 1959 named d’Arenberg Burgundy and changed names in the early 1990’s. The nose is lifted with floral tones of violet and a touch of lavender noticeable first with a back-ground of cooked meat and spicy red fruits tied together with an enticing earthiness. The palate has a velvety mouth feel and fantastic balance with raspberry, boysenberry, plum and prune building to a back palate of spices and a touch of pepper. The silky tannins and a subtle cinnamon character provide for a long refined finish. The balance of fruit, lively acidity and tannin is the hallmark of this wine and with careful cellaring it will drink well over the next decade, but is already a delightfully slippery drink.

This smells like a fruit bowl and a flower bowl with an effusive nose, spicy white pepper and curry/middle eastern notes then a touch of poop, intense and complex, intriguing with a sweet note of fruitcake. Big on entry with a plush but very smooth mouth feel with lots of acid and very fine tannins that are a touch drying but support the watermelon, spicy cherry/ dried cherry, dried cranberry, fruit bomb flavors very well. Light finish with very gentle wood spice tones and cleansing acidity, red fruits galore with a vanilla and herb edge. It’s a touch simple but very true to type. 88pts

Dark fruit. Great tannins on the backend with a touch of oak. Almost a little rose-y on the nose, but with balls.

Very strange nose of chemical and plastic. Unbalanced and awkward, this had a tart mouth feel and was sweet and salty. Not good. N/A

For over four decades, veteran Aussie vintner d'Arry Osborn has made this classic Shiraz-Grenache blend. Now his son Chester helps produce the soft, rich wine with its engaging cherry and berry flavors.

Tasting Notes:

The fruit was gently crushed in rubber-toothed Demoisy crushers then transferred to headed-down open fermenters, with a small amount of the Shiraz fruit undergoing carbonic maceration. The lifted nose emits floral notes of violet and lavender with savory meatiness and spicy red fruits. A velvety palate with raspberry and boysenberry fruits builds to a back palate of subtle spice and cracked black pepper. The silky tannins and a cinnamon notes provide for a long, refined finish.
