What to Expect
Grenache is the main grape in many Rhone blends and most Cotes du Rhone and Chateaunuef-du-pape. It's a grape that yields soft, lightly colored yet full wines endowed with deep notes of strawberry and raspberry. While not prone to producing particularly rich or complex wines in France, Grenache is one of the world's most widely-planted grapes, producing unique expression where ever it is planted. Another Aussie wine that brings out great QPR. Starting out, the nose was kinda difficult to catch - when you do, you get a whiff of crushed cherries and some herb, maybe thyme. Generally fruit-forward tastes of fleshy black cherries, a little oak and leather at the end. You can really taste the skin contact as the tannins are more pronounced. It matched nicely with a piece of steak the 1st day. On the second day, I had it with some buffalo chicken wings, and quite pleased that it stood up to the buffalo wing spices I did notice that it kinda lost its balance a bit after a day, but still good nevertheless. read more...

Wine Advocate ReviewOne of my consistent favorites from d'Arenberg is their d'Arry's Original, and the terrific 2004 is a super value. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful blackberry, cassis, cherry, and licorice scents with hints of Provencal herbs and pepper in the background. This medium to full-bodied, front end-loaded blend of Shiraz and Grenache possesses considerable fruit, body, and silky tannins as well as enough acidity to provide definition. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
