D'Angelo Estate Vineyard originated in Montrose, Yarra Valley, in 1994 when Domenico D'Angelo started planting Pinot Noir grapes for himself. By 1997 the Pinot Noir grapes were ready to be harvested for the very first vintage. From the small amount of grapes that was harvested, Domenico¹s son, Benny D'Angelo made the first batch of wine, two barrels in total. After a few months Benny started to show his wine to friends in the wine industry and they were all quite impressed. He then decided to put the wine into several amateur wine shows and got some great accolades. In the meantime, Domenico planted more Pinot Noir vines and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. From that, Domenico expanded the plantation of vines on his property to a full capacity of 7 acres in total. In September 2000, Benny D'Angelo and his family bought 10 acres of land in Officer which faces Western Port Bay with French Island in his views and Philliip Island behind. Benny¹s first mission was to plant vines. In January 2001 Benny planted 7 acres of vines, and the rest is history. D'Angelo Estate Vineyard comprises of two vineyards, one in Officer and the other in Montrose, Victoria. The new D'Angelo Estate Vineyard at Officer is located on the North Side of Princess Highway on the outskirt of Berwick, just 45 minutes south east of Melbourne. The topography of Officer makes an excellent site for growing cool climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and just recently planted some Shiraz and Viognier. The soil and climate is ideal for bringing out the complex flavours of all these varietal grapes. Montrose is on the eastern side of Melbourne just before Yarra Valley, which is classified as the Yarra Valley region. From this vineyard, D'Angelo Estate produces Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Both of these vineyards are family owned and are maintained by the D'Angelo family. Benny has a long standing agreement with a premium of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from Langhorne Creek (S.A) on low yielding vines. Our goal at D'Angelo Estate Wines is to expand the vineyard with more vines and develop a full time cellar door with coffee, light meals. In the early stages it will be opened by appointment only. Benny D'Angelo¹s passion and love of wine inspired him to produce that first barrel of wine. As winemaker, his interest and drive to make great wines has lead to the success of D'Angelo Estate Wines and in a very small time his wines have gone on to win many awards, including Gold, Silver, Bronze and 5 Star Ratings in wine shows and wine magazines throughout Australia. Benny believes he is a very fortunate person who is able to do something he really loves and thrives on. As winemaker his ongoing goal is to grow and make the most complex and enjoyable wine, which “captures the essence of life”. Read less
