D Arenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

External Review by Cellar Link Pty Ltd:

This wine has a deep, dark, vibrant black appearance suggesting a full-bodied dry red. The aroma is dense and complex with a mix of fragrant fruit dominated by cassis, blackcurrants, mulberries, coffee, toffee and dark chocolate with fine cedar oak developing in the background. The palate shows a lighter, fresher, more elegant style of wine compared to recent vintages but is overwhelmingly complex and compressed. Young primary flavours of dark black fruits, violets, cassis and red currants mixed with edges of dried herbs, green bean and capsicum dominate. As the wine opens up an abundant mix of violets, earthy notes and mulberries appear over dark fruits with really tight flowery tannins and minerals that fan out on the finish. The great fruit, length and fragrance of this wine show the overall elegance of this wonderful vintage.

From the Stump Jumps through to the highly regarded Icons, these wines offer value, individuality and a true taste of McLaren Vale. The Icons The Ironstone Pressings, The Coppermine Road, The Dead Arm Shiraz The Icons are the most powerful and concentrated of d’Arenberg’s wines. Comprising of the Dead Arm, the Coppermine Road and the Ironstone Pressings, this range represents the pinnacle of d’Arenberg’s efforts. Century old, low-yielding vines produce intensely flavored fruit which is traditionally vinified and undergoes rigorous barrel-selection prior to classification. Chester's Champions The Lucky Lizard, The Twentyeight Road, The Last Ditch, The Money Spider, The Feral Fox, The Sticks & Stones, The Derelict Vineyard, The Cadenzia, The Galvo Garage, The Laughing Magpie Since the early 1900’s, d’Arenberg has pioneered innovative wine styles and varietal plantings. Chester’s Champions represent d’Arenberg’s most exciting new ventures, offering an eclectic alternative to the known and loved bastions of the portfolio. The Classic Red Stripes The Dry Dam, The Broken Fishplate, The Olive Grove, The Hermit Crab, The Custodian, The High Trellis, d’Arrys Original, The Love Grass, The Footbolt. The Classic Red Stripes represent the backbone of the d’Arenberg range. Considered the epitome of d’Arenberg’s style, they are a reflection of skillful winemaking and unique terroir – regionally expressive, fruit-forward and approachable. This wine has a deep, dark, vibrant appearance with an almost plummy-red hue. The nose initially shows an intense mix of coffee, cassis, blackcurrants, blueberries and dried cherry notes. As the wine opens there are complex spiced, tarry, hung meat elements and fine-grained oak characters lifting through. The palate is intense with a mix of dark black fruits, violets, cassis and red currents which linger towards a chocolatey dried herb finish. There is an immense concentration of fruit that hangs off a central backbone that runs down the roof of your mouth which softens the wall of tannins that encapsulate this wine. The purity of fruit is superb. its long, the flavours are dominate red as it fan tails out to the finish leaving a palate texture reminiscing of home-made pastry made with real butter.
