Cypress Vineyards Shiraz Santa Clara Valley 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 J. Lohr Cuvée PAU is dark burgundy in color and delivers immediate notes of plum and dark chocolate, with intense flavors of rich black fruit, bright acidity and dense tannins that glide over the palate. — Steve Peck, Red Winemaker

Cypress Bend Vineyards officially opened its doors in late June of 2005. After four years of cultivating thirty acres of muscadine variety grapes (better known as Scuppernong), Dan and Tina Smith have decided to share their passion for these grapes with the public. Growing the muscadine cultivars -- Carlos, Noble, Magnolia, Doreen and Triumph -- Cypress Bend Vineyards is taking the sweet taste of the muscadine grape to new levels in their eleven muscadine table wines and one after dinner wine. Cypress Bend's wide variety of wine includes a Chardonnay and a Syrah. The Lumber River, situated in the coastal plain of North Carolina, helps nurture the land, making it the perfect grape growing soil. Come join us on the patio of our winery, unwind and take a stroll through the vines or sip a glass of wine while enjoying some tasty treats offered in our retail shop.We invite you to taste all of our wine selections and enjoy the atmosphere of Cypress Bend Vineyards produced by the fruits of generations of labor. Growing the muscadine cultivars -- Carlos, Noble, Magnolia, Doreen and Triumph -- Cypress Bend Vineyards is taking the sweet taste of the muscadine grape to new levels in their eleven muscadine table wines and one after dinner wine. Cypress Bend's wide variety of wine also includes a Chardonnay and a Syrah. The quality of a Muscadine wine is directly dependent on the quality on the stock. Cypress Bend Vineyards selected from among 300 cultivars, settling finally on the five which would yield the right combinations of productivity and flavor. Carlos is a North Carolina native, vigorous and highly productive, identifiable by its clusters of bronze-colored fruit. Contrast these with the deep red grapes of Noble, another prolific producer. Doreen produces a bright green grape with a distinctive, slightly elongated shape. Magnolia is another vigorous vine yielding large quantities of bronze-colored berries. And finally, Triumph is a Georgia native with a slight reddish blush on its skin which has adapted quite well to North Carolina. Read less

Quite ripe on the nose with effusive, jammy and slightly pruney aromas of black currant and plum over vanilla oak with a menthol top note. Round, smooth and a bit hollow in the mouth with a nice base of soft tannins and good acidity supporting decidedly ripe chocolate, prune, and dried herb framed black currant fruit. The finish is a bit on the short side, showing some sweetness and cocoa notes and overall this lacks some nuance though it is rich and fairly powerful. 87pts
