Cycles Gladiator Syrah 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy on the nose, and floral, with nice complexity and balance to the array of perfumes that include sweet, toasty oak, black pepper, slightly jammy plummy fruit and lots of peppery spice. It’s all a bit obvious, and the oak is a bit harsh, but it’s well balanced. Smooth and suple. Really remarkably so for a wine at this price. This is a bit creamy but with finely tuned acids lending freshness to the distinctly blackberry fruit on the palate. The wood creeps in adding spice and air brings out violet and peppery nuance. Finishing with freshness and dusty if sweet wood tannins, this turns a bit rougher but it retains the attractively pure and fresh fruit that it exhibits on the palate right through the long, peppery and spicy finish. Quintessential value priced Syrah. 86pts

Cycles Gladiator Wines:
Cycles Gladiator symbolizes a celebration of the freedom and happiness that pervaded Europe in the late 19th century—an era known as the Belle Epoque. This era marked many notable inventions and improvements to daily life, not the least of which was the modern bicycle or Le Bicycle Velocipede.

This wine has all the characteristics of Syrah with Bacon and black fruit and spice. Love it

The nose was very expressive with blackberry, plum sauce, pepper, bacon fat and a hint of cola. On the palate, it was rich, yet juicy and fresh with sweet black fruits, clove and wild herbs. It showed incredible focus of fruit that stayed into the long, mouth-coating finish.

Jammy and full, but nicely balanced and not overly sweet. Price is right too. Somewhere I got away from this kind of red, moving more toward sharper, smokier, drier wines, and drinking this was something of a pleasure for the memory as well as the tongue.

A nice mid to moderately spicy syrah with ripe black cherries and perfect balance. A really super value.

The deep-ruby-colored Cycles Gladiator 2010 Syrah opens with notes of blueberry and tobacco. Intense flavors burst into the mouth with notes of dark fruit, espresso and dried herbs layered with spice. This wine is complex and balanced, with soft tannins and good acidity, tapering off to an elegant finish. This wine is an excellent partner for foods such as wild fowl and grilled meats. Try it with duck or pheasant dishes, or savory barbecued ribs. - Winery

An intriguing combination of raspberry and plum aromas framed by fresh cracked pepper and pretty oak notes. The mouth is decidedly rich and spicy with big red fruit flavors layered over spice, tobacco, and blueberry. The mouthfeel is full bodied with soft tannins that melt into a medium thread of acidity.
