Cuvelier Los Andes Malbec 2015

Member Review by shsim:

I had this as part of a Argentinian tasting at a local wine store. This was pleasant with good fruity nose. Smooth and well-balanced, it just needs more time. For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/08/sd-wine-co-argentinian.html

An oddly brackish note, like raw clams, dominates the nose and persists – not a flaw, but unusual – into the mouth, where it’s joined by dark plum in a strong and enduring structure. A good match for strong-tasting meats like lamb and venison! (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=1248)

Really needs to be decanted or opened the day before to taste reasonable well.

With similar blends and provenance, it’s a shootout for Bordeaux style malbec-based wines between Cuvelier and Clos de los Siete. Cuvelier wins this round with a well-rounded, refined effort that offers cherry and plum flavors along with a touch of rose in the bouquet. (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=696)

An opaque garnet color portends a deeply concentrated wine, and this one delivers. The almost overwhelmingly perfumed bouquet precedes a rock-solid red blend anchored firmly by the cabernet sauvignon. The flavors, if not complex, are direct: malbec’s red berries in opposition to cabernet’s darker ones, with jammy undertones. The only flaw is a slightly grainy texture that may smooth out a bit with age. (AV 91, http://argovino.com/?p=870)

Mendoza, ArgentinaVinous 90 points!Cuvelier Los Andes Malbec is a beautiful red wine gem from Mendoza. In 1998 Bertrand Cuvelier made the happy choice of personally accompanying Michel Rolland in his great Argentine project, which was to become the Clos de Los Siete group. Three years later, Jean-Guy Cuvelier decided to join his cousin Bertrand in the joint aim of building a Winery and producing fine wines worthy of the family tradition. The agreement between Bertrand and Jean-Guy Cuvelier was symbolically signed in the great office of their common ancestor, Henri Cuvelier, in Lille-Haubourdin, in the north of France. Since then, the Winery has been built and each year the vines of Cuvelier Los Andes have contributed 50% of their production to Clos de Los Siete, the wine signed by Michel Rolland. The success of this wine is worldwide due to the exceptional value for money it offers."Bright medium ruby. Vibrant, penetrating aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet and bitter chocolate; an essence of Malbec. Dense and seamless but youthful and light on its feet, showing lovely restrained sweetness but noteworthy thickness and depth to its pure, vibrant flavors of crushed dark berries and bitter chocolate. This suave, concentrated Malbec should open out beautifully with a few years of cellaring. Finishes with firm, ripe tannins and excellent sneaky length and energy. This is an awfully good value."--Stephen Tanzer, March/2016, Vinous, 90 points!Enjoy Cuvelier Los Andes Malbec with veal chops, roast duck, creamy pastas and aged cheeses.

Polished and well-structured, this red offers fine tannins and fresh acidity supporting notes of pure cassis and black cherry puree. Spice, mineral and dark tobacco hints add range to the finish. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2016. -NW Medium red-ruby. Aromatic, expressive nose offers blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and a touch of violet. Juicy and tightly wound but still pliant, with lovely energy and shape to the flavors of dark berries, dark chocolate and licorice. Finishes fresh and ripely tannic, with a youthfully medicinal quality to the lingering black fruit and licorice flavors. This very promising wine needs a few years in bottle to soften. - Stephen Tanzer 90+ Points The 2010 Collecion Cabernet Sauvignon displays darker fruit and a bit more richness. Supple, ripe, and velvety on the palate, it will offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2020.

Wine Spectator scored it 91 points saying "Polished and well-structured, this red offers fine tannins and fresh acidity supporting notes of pure cassis and black cherry puree.
