Cupcake Vineyards Zinfandel 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Cupcake Vineyards Lodi Zinfandel comes from head-trained vines grown in rich sandy loam soils. Head training is the ideal trellis for Zinfandel as it produces lower quantities of grapes with more intensity and higher sugar content. Warm days with cool afternoon breezes produce tiny fruit with intense jammy flavors and hints of spice and black pepper. All the clusters are gently harvested by hand to protect the berries.

Our winery is located in Monterey County, California where warm days give way to cool nights as the fog rolls in off of the Pacific Ocean. It’s this cooling influence that slows the growing process, increasing the time the grapes “hang” on the vine and thereby allow our grapes to mature a little slower than in hotter regions. Slow growth and cool weather leads to a more balanced level of acids and sugars, thereby adding to the complexity and structure of the wines of the Central Coast. This region is poised to become one of the newest and most exciting viticultural opportunities in the coming years. This slow pace continues in our cellar where we take the time to craft wines that are complex, rewarding and hand made. Gentle pressing, cool fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and long barrel aging in small barriques allow us to elevate our wines so that they are rich, creamy and downright delicious. Our winemaker, Adam Richardson has since added a few additional wines from other cool climate regions to augment our portfolio and match up with additional cupcake profiles, like our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Yakima Valley Riesling, and Mendoza Malbec. Go ahead, live deliciously. Read less

Rather big and herbal on the nose but lovely ripe herbs all laid upon a base of sweet black currant and blackberry fruit supported by some cedary oak. Round, soft and a bit matte in the mouth this delivers slightly meaty and cocoa dusted black fruits with a subtle leathery edge. The acidity is a bit low for me, and the tannins rather soft but this rich, smooth style should prove to be very appealing. The backend shows black currant fruit which turns into sweet black cherry flavors on the slightly sticky and modest finish. A mini fruit bomb. 84pts

Tasting Notes:

Our Zinfandel is handcrafted with premium grapes from Lodi, California, one of the most well-known Zinfandel growing regions in the world. This fruity wine is filled with decadent flavors of blueberries, spice and ripe raspberry jam with a long finish that delights the plate. It’s reminiscent of a black forest cupcake with raspberry filling. Enjoy with sautéed Portabella mushrooms or a tasty beef barbecue.
