Editorial Reviews for Cupcake Vineyards Merlot San Luis Obispo County
Very red fruited on the nose with light wood spice tones and an intriguing hint of raw beef and iron. In the mouth this is a lean Merlot, but in a good way with plum skin right up front followed by lovely minerality that recalls riverstones lurking within a fresh strawberry tones mid-palate with refreshing acids and soft tannins that lead to an slightly short, earthy little finish. A really solid offering at this price point and much better expressed than your typical sweet high alcohol examples that this competes with. 87pts

Soft, berried merlot with a light sweet frosting on top. Lovely, especially for the price.
This was a very delicate surprise for the price. The 2005 Cupcake Merlot was a bit flatter, not as refined or spicy. Where the 2005 fell flat, the 2006 was a stunner. I paired it with pizza one night, and a herby fish preparation the next night. Both times, the sophisticated and subtle nuances were a nice note. I really feel this Merlot needs to be paired with something herbal or spicy, to wake it up.
Ripe delicate fruit with a touch of spice and nice complexity on the finish. Exceptional balance and a super value.
had a definite cherry-candy flavor, but seemed a little flat to me, compared with other bargain merlots....
Not too bad, with plum and currant aromas touched by a bit of vanillin oak. Cherry and plum flavors dominate the palate.

Luscious fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry. These primary flavors are augmented with secondary flavors of vanilla, toasty oak and spices including clove and nutmeg. The addition of complementary varietals contributes to a velvety mouth feel and lingering, smooth finish. This wine is at its best if enjoyed within a year of release, but should be able to age in the bottle for up to three years.
2006 Mirassou® California Merlot Balancing intense fruit flavors with delicate aromas and subtle hints of oak, Mirassou wines embody the optimism and pioneering spirit passed down through six generations of the Mirassou family. Featuring a bright, approachable style, these wines honor the Mirassou family’s heritage while appealing to a new generation of wine enthusiasts. Winemaking Notes The 2006 Mirassou California Merlot was sourced from several of the state’s top winegrowing regions including Sonoma and the Central Coast. The fruit was sourced from select vineyards to take advantage of the different fruit characteristics each region produces. Sonoma has excellent climatic conditions, due to its San Francisco Bay cool air intrusion, which is desirable for creating deep fruit flavors. The Central Coast’s hilly terrain creates multiple types of soil which produces a rich blend of flavors, enhancing the wine’s complexity. The 2006 Mirassou California Merlot is primarily composed of Merlot with some additional varietals, including Zinfandel and Syrah. The Zinfandel adds some brown spices flavors and a bit of acidity, while the Syrah adds dark fruit flavors and a deep inky color. The grapes were harvested in October 2006 at a Brix level of 24.5. They were then gently destemmed prior to fermentation resulting in some whole-berry fermentation. Fermentation temperatures were targeted at 85 degrees Fahrenheit for five to seven days to retain fruitiness and reduce harshness. The wine was racked every 3 to 4 months to remove the lees and allow the bright fruit characteristics to come through. The final result is a luscious, jammy Merlot that is approachable and gives a mouth full of flavor. Taste Profile The 2006 Mirassou California Merlot displays luscious fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry. These primary flavors are augmented with secondary flavors of vanilla, toasty oak and brown spices. The addition of Zinfandel and Syrah varietals contribute to a full-bodied mouth feel and lingering, smooth finish. This wine is at its best if enjoyed within a year of release, but should be able to age in the bottle for up to three years if carefully cellared. Finished Wine Offering fresh fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry, balanced with elegant toasty aromas and hints of spice, Mirassou California Merlot is a bright expression of California’s most celebrated growing regions.
