What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Editorial Reviews

Very red fruited on the nose with light wood spice tones and an intriguing hint of raw beef and iron. In the mouth this is a lean Merlot, but in a good way with plum skin right up front followed by lovely minerality that recalls riverstones lurking within a fresh strawberry tones mid-palate with refreshing acids and soft tannins that lead to an slightly short, earthy little finish. A really solid offering at this price point and much better expressed than your typical sweet high alcohol examples that this competes with. 87pts

Reviews

This was a very delicate surprise for the price. The 2005 Cupcake Merlot was a bit flatter, not as refined or spicy. Where the 2005 fell flat, the 2006 was a stunner. I paired it with pizza one night, and a herby fish preparation the next night. Both times, the sophisticated and subtle nuances were a nice note. I really feel this Merlot needs to be paired with something herbal or spicy, to wake it up.

Deep berries and spice. A touch of heat on the nose. Flavors are tart, acidic, somewhat light.

Soft, berried merlot with a light sweet frosting on top. Lovely, especially for the price.

had a definite cherry-candy flavor, but seemed a little flat to me, compared with other bargain merlots....

Has excellent potential but a little light for my taste

Fusha's Restaurant in NYC was promoting the Cupcake wines and the Bartendar highly recommended the Chardonay with our Rock Shrimp dinner. It was fantastic! I went on line today to see the price(s) and it made my day, especially during these hard economic times. Suzy/NYC
