Cupcake Sauv Blanc 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

"Sourced from the South Island of New Zealand, this Sauvignon Blanc exhibits complexity and a vibrant zing. Flavors of Meyer lemons and Key limes integrate with hints of grapefruit, gooseberry and citrus, culminating in a long, creamy finish. Long, cool seasons in New Zealand’s Marlborough region allow our grapes to mature slowly and gain character and complexity. The grapes are harvested at night and gently crushed before undergoing cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. An extended fermentation sur lie adds richness and softness, complementing the fruit’s natural zest and acidity." -Winery Website

Our winery is located in Monterey County, California where warm days give way to cool nights as the fog rolls in off of the Pacific Ocean. It’s this cooling influence that slows the growing process, increasing the time the grapes “hang” on the vine and thereby allow our grapes to mature a little slower than in hotter regions. Slow growth and cool weather leads to a more balanced level of acids and sugars, thereby adding to the complexity and structure of the wines of the Central Coast. This region is poised to become one of the newest and most exciting viticultural opportunities in the coming years. This slow pace continues in our cellar where we take the time to craft wines that are complex, rewarding and hand made. Gentle pressing, cool fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and long barrel aging in small barriques allow us to elevate our wines so that they are rich, creamy and downright delicious. Our winemaker, Adam Richardson has since added a few additional wines from other cool climate regions to augment our portfolio and match up with additional cupcake profiles, like our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Yakima Valley Riesling, and Mendoza Malbec. Go ahead, live deliciously. Read less

Very fresh fruited on the nose with dusty, chalky tones and a fair amount of oak. In the mouth this has solid acidity and just a hint of sugar supporting the orange creamsicle and lightly peachy fruit. There is nice richness and good length with a creamy finish. Very typical and solid California Chardonnay. 86pts

Fresh apples, lime, yeast, tea and dried leaves on a nose that smells a bit sweet. Very high acid help to cut through the noticeable sweetness on the palate. This is fruit driven and full of lemony and apply fruit, tastes much like fizzy Chardonnay. A bit coarse and rough and tumble but full of fruit and zippy acids. 86pts

One of our favorite reds, period. We had the Cupcake Merlot for dinner tonight, and it is also very good--more tannins and spice.

Clean and crisp with a citrus bite! This wine is delicious especially paired with a sweet and creamy treat like cheesecake, or something more savory like an herbed and grilled wood plank salmon.

Being a fan of sauvignon blanc I was pretty disappointed when I cracked open this bottle. It was bitter and left an awkward after taste in my mouth. The hint of grapefruit was there. Semi dry and not overly sweet.

Surprised that I loved it this much. I like more peppery wines, but even though it is more mellow, it was still full bodied. Delicious but has been sold out where I live. Had to order a half a case! Can't wait :)

Unfortunately in NYC this wine is the same price as their chardonnay, $9.99. I LOVE their chardonnay, so I bought TWO bottles of the sauvignon blanc, since they were the same price. I'm drinking it now and really hating it. It smells like...ugh. Tastes terrible. Now I'm going to have to drink both bottles so I don't serve them to guests! :( I'm just amazed at the difference.

Our vineyard works hard to bring you the zestiest, most refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from the cool Marlborough Valley. Here the grapes mature slowly, giving them complexity and a vibrant zing, reminiscent of a lemon chiffon cupcake. The aromas are integrated, delighting the senses with flavors of Meyer lemons, Key limes and a finish that awakens the appetite. Serve chilled with oysters on the half shell or with a rich, creamy lobster risotto. - Winery

A big, rich wine from California’s Central Coast, our full and elegantly textured Chardonnay has decadent levels of butter, cream, bright citrus and vanilla. These layers melt into a balance of oak and subtle spice. This wine epitomizes the Central Coast’s crisp and vibrant Chardonnay character. We use a malolactic fermentation to impart rich buttery flavor, then leave the wine sur lie to achieve a full, soft body. Aging for nine months in premium American oak barrels enhances the golden color, adds creamy texture, and injects nuances of subtle toasty oak and spice. - Winery

Appellation: Central Coast, California Winemaker’s Tasting Notes: Cupcake vineyard works hard to craft the richest, smoothest and elegantly-textured wines. This full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon shows soft tannins, with primary fruit flavors of blackberry, dark cherry and cassis. These levels of dark fruits melt with the tastes of cocoa and toasty oak and ends with a long, smooth and silky finish. - Winery Food Pairing Recommendations: Serve with venison glazed with a Cabernet Sauvignon sauce or baked brie drizzled with honey. Winemaking Notes: The Cabernet Sauvignon was cool fermented with frequent pump-overs in the early stages of fermentation to extract the soft tannins and color during the aqueous phase. Then the grape skins were pressed before the fermentation reached dryness to maintain the wine’s lush tannin structure. The must was kept cool during fermentation to help create a slower fermentation and allowed the wine to retain more aromatic properties as well as complexity of flavor and body. The wine was then aged in premium American oak barrels – adding richness and complexity.

Cupcake Chardonnay was crafted to emphasize the Central Coast's creamy and structured Chardonnay character. It starts off with a touch of apple, a hint of tropical fruits and is complimented by a balance of vanilla and spice. We used malolactic fermentation with aging in small barrels to provide a rich mid palate that develops into a long, smooth, satisfying finish.
