Cupcake Riesling 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

The vines of the Mosel Valley are planted on nearly vertical fields that run down to the Mosel River itself. These vines are trained in heart shapes leaving the walls of the river valley covered with green hearts. Due to the steep inclines all the grapes are hand harvested. Once back at the crush pad the grapes are de-stemmed and gently pressed before undergoing a cool, slow fermentation with a Riesling specific yeast to accentuate the delicate flavors on this wine. The wine was then aged sur lie and stirred regularly for up to two months. This stirring process helps round out the body of the wine and creates the soft creamy notes that make this wine indisputably Cupcake.

Our winery is located in Monterey County, California where warm days give way to cool nights as the fog rolls in off of the Pacific Ocean. It’s this cooling influence that slows the growing process, increasing the time the grapes “hang” on the vine and thereby allow our grapes to mature a little slower than in hotter regions. Slow growth and cool weather leads to a more balanced level of acids and sugars, thereby adding to the complexity and structure of the wines of the Central Coast. This region is poised to become one of the newest and most exciting viticultural opportunities in the coming years. This slow pace continues in our cellar where we take the time to craft wines that are complex, rewarding and hand made. Gentle pressing, cool fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and long barrel aging in small barriques allow us to elevate our wines so that they are rich, creamy and downright delicious. Our winemaker, Adam Richardson has since added a few additional wines from other cool climate regions to augment our portfolio and match up with additional cupcake profiles, like our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Yakima Valley Riesling, and Mendoza Malbec. Go ahead, live deliciously. Read less

Nice straw color, nice lime and lemon notes, good acid balance but a short finish. Slight honey--Pleasant wine that needs to be more extracted to be judged with the best QbAs. Very similar to their 2012 Mosel Riesling. Probably 1% RS. My rating 86.

Cupcake Riesling starts off with a nose that shows hints of ripe honeydew and lemon chiffon. It fills the palate with the flavors of creamy lemons, bright citrus fruits and just a hint of sweetness. Broad and full-bodied, it finishes with a zesty thirst quaffing zing that leaves the imbiber wanting another glass. It is reminiscent of a lemon cream cupcake.
