Cullen Wines Chardonnay Margaret River Kevin John 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

*Awarded a Trophy- Decanter World Wine Awards 2010* Cullen’s 28 hectares of vineyards are located in the Margaret River, an area renowned for producing wines of character and depth. The grapes for this wine come from the subregion of Wilyabrup. Cullen Wines became the first carbon neutral winery and vineyard in Australia. The estate vineyard was certified Organic ‘A’ grade in 2003 and Biodynamic ‘A’ grade in 2004 by the Biological Farmers Association of Australia. Biodynamic techniques were used to produce the Chardonnay fruit, which ensures that the wine naturally reflects the vineyard characteristics. 70% of the wine was fermented using wild yeasts. This component was matured for just five months in new French oak to ensure that, while oak still had an influence, it remained in the background. 30% of the wine was prevented from undergoing malolactic fermentation, which facilitates the retention of both freshness and natural acidity. This fantastic Chardonnay shows youthful green gold in colour, expressing complex aromas of elderflower, lime and apricots, with a touch of clean vanillin oak. Elegant, pure and intense on the palate, the delicious lime fruit flavours fill out the middle palate, which is backed by attractive and subtle barrel ferment oak flavours. The finish is crisp, long and lingering. A fantastic wine to pair with chicken breast in a creamy white sauce with pancetta, leeks and sauteed potatoes.

The conclusion that Margaret River was ideal for viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen planted a trial acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971. Cullen Wines while remaining family owned has since evolved making quality wine from biodynamically grown grapes sourced exclusively from The Cullen Estate Vineyard and Mangan Vineyard. Read less
