Cullen 'Diana Madeline' Margaret River Red 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

*94+ - Wine Advocate* *18+ - JancisRobinson.com* *98 Pts - James Halliday* Cullen’s 50 hectares of vineyards are located in the Wilyabrup part of Margaret River. Founded in 1971 by Di and Kevin Cullen, the winemaking is now managed by their daughter Vanya. Passion and a strong sense of responsibility to the land define Vanya’s biodynamic approach to viticulture, while pioneering environmental initiatives led to Cullen becoming Australia’s first carbon neutral winery in 2007. Deep red garnet. The nose has amazing clarity and complexity, with a very attractive combination of violets, rose, cassis and red peppers. Beautifully balanced and long, the palate represents a marvellous blend of rich chocolate, plum, mulberry and notes of cassis. It is concentrated and supported by a beautiful lingering ironstone mineral finish. Fruit purity really stands out. Can be cellared for 10+ years.

The conclusion that Margaret River was ideal for viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen planted a trial acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971. Cullen Wines while remaining family owned has since evolved making quality wine from biodynamically grown grapes sourced exclusively from The Cullen Estate Vineyard and Mangan Vineyard. Read less
