Crossroads Winery Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2009

External Review by Astor Wines & Spirits:

This New Zealand Chardonnay sees a light dose of new oak aging. It's a beautiful expression of fresh apples, white flowers and vanilla. Rich and round on the palate with refreshing acidity to stand up to heartier fare.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Intense and concentrated, with a fleshy array of ripe peach, apricot and poached pear flavors. Graphite, mocha-tinged toasty oak and lemon zest carry through the finish. Drink now through 2009.

In the shadow of the ubiquitous Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand has produced a number of outstanding Chardonnays. The 2006 Crossroads Chardonnay is one such wine. It reveals its complexity beginning on the nose, where you are taken on an olfactory odyssey from melon, pineapple and orange, to nutmeg and caramel. Your palate is met first by dried apricot and lemon peel, evolving into allspice, just a hint of oak and, finally, butterscotch. All of these elements are brought into harmony by a wonderfully subtle acidity that results in a stunning oenological experience, ending with a long, elegant finish.

The 2009 Chardonnay has a leesy, yeasty nose complemented by citrus and stone fruit notes and some cream. The medium-high acid is balanced on the creamy, silky, full bodied palate, finishing medium-long. Drink now, it should keep to 2013.
