Vintage: 1985 02/06/2008

Croft never seems to get much publicity since the wines, while always very good, sometimes even excellent, never quite reach the superb level of the top houses in Oporto. However, Croft seems to do surprisingly well, often rivaling the top ports, in the less glamorous vintages such as 1975 and 1966. The1985 will be an early-developing port. It shows aromas that border on overripeness and offers scents of plums and black cherries. Full-bodied, rich yet lush and soft, this husky wine had loads of concentration, a very sweet long finish and light tannins.

Bright, saturated ruby. Brooding aromas of bitter cherry, violet and licorice, lifted by a resiny nuance. Then densely packed, concentrated and fresh, with rich, fleshy flavors of kirsch and dark chocolate. Finishes with big, broad, thoroughly ripe tannins and very good lingering black cherry fruit. This is surprisingly easy to taste today but should age well on its ripe tannins and sheer balance.

The essence of grapes. Full-bodied and tannic, yet very classy and refined. It's got grip, but rather than smashing you over the head with structure, it seduces gently with its wonderful, well-toned muscles. Best Croft since 1945. Better after 2010.

This impressive vintage port may turn out to be the most impressive wine from Croft in decades. The healthy purple/black color is followed by copious amounts of licorice, chocolate, and over-ripe black fruits. Full- bodied and unctuously-textured, with layers of juicy, succulent, full-throttle fruit, glycerin, high alcohol, and powerful tannin, this large-scaled, youthful vintage port will benefit from 7-10 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 30+ years.

The 1994 Croft exhibits an impressive dark ruby/purple color, and a developed, forward, more evolved style than expected. It is moderately sweet, full-bodied, expansive, pure, and rich, but made in an up-front, flattering style. Although outstanding, it is not one of the superstars of the vintage. It will keep for twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020.

Vintage Port partisans will be arguing over the relative merits of 1991 and 1992 for years. This first salvo makes a great case for 1991's potential, a massive wine with terrific black fruit aromas and flavors. You would have to go back to 1966 to find a Croft Port this good.
