Cristom 'Jessie Vineyards' Pinot Noir 2015

Member Review by ledavis4:

An excellent wine - deliciously smooth with hints of cherry, currant, and other dark berry flavors. A bit heavier than some of the other Cristom Pinot Noirs.

Cristom's founder and owner, Paul Gerrie, used his skills as an engineer and avid researcher to pursue his passion for wine. On his travels to France, he was introduced to the traditional growing practices of the Burgundy region. He learned that soil ( terroir ) and site were key in developing the complexity of the fruit. After a 1991 visit to the International Pinot Celebration in Oregon, Paul decided the time was right to leave the East Coast and bring his family and his passion for great Pinot Noir to Oregon's burgeoning wine country. But their journey wasn't complete without a winemaker who shared Paul's vision of "letting the land make the wines." Enter Steve Doerner who, after a quarter century of experience, still believes the winemaker's job is to "optimize what nature — the vineyard — provides." In addition to his reputation as a master winemaker with "keen intuition" (possibly from his French heritage), Steve is a biochemist who had been making wine in California. And so with a passion that only wine enthusiasts embrace and a precision that can only come from a chemist and an engineer, the two set out to cultivate their vision, which today, can be seen in the seven distinct vineyards on Cristom's 65 acres. As are most trained scientists, Paul and Steve are keen observers. While they are still advocates of tradition, they continually experiment both in the vineyards and in the cellar. A recent example is the introduction of Viognier to the Willamette Valley. Cristom was one of the first to plant it, even though conventional wisdom assumed the climate was too wet. "We planted it on our sunniest acre and got nice vintages right away," explained Steve. Read less

This is another great pinot noir from Cristom. I have a slight preference to the 2007 Eileen Vineyard over the Jessie Vineyard, both unquestionably great pinot noir. The 2007 Eileen Vineyard pinot noir is very smooth without a single sharp edge. Everything is in perfect balance. Upon opening the bottle, the beatiful aromas come at you. Raspberries, strawberries, dark cherries along with some floral and spice notes. The wine tastes of cherries, plums, strawberries, and a hints of blue berries. Soft notes of cocoa and baking spice complete the flavors. The finish is silky, pleasant, and long lasting

Brick red in the glass. Lightly smoky nose. Peppery dried herb and plum fruit on the nose. Spicy profile. Diminishing fruit, so all that's left is plum. Fleshy. Stony minerality. Zesty herb and white pepper notes. Nice, but needs food. Cinnamon dust influence. Drink now. 89 pts. 5/18/13

Late in life for this bottle but still lovely. Raspberry and cherry combined with an earthiness this wine has nice subtleties and is a delight.

The views from the top of the east-facing Jessie Vineyard are some of Cristom s most spectacular. On a clear day, the Cascade Mountains (including Mts. Jefferson, Hood, and Adams) sparkle. Named after Paul Gerrie s paternal grandmother, Jessie Sommers, Jessie Vineyard is the steepest on the Cristom property.

Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, seductive aromas of raspberry, candied rose, anise and minerals. Intense cherry and red berry preserve flavors are brightened by zesty minerals, picking up a floral pastille quality with aeration. The finish repeats the c... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
