Crane Lake Pinot Noir California 2007

I'll admit, I've been aging this bottle a bit more than intended--must've purchased it a year or two ago. We just drank it with dinner last night, and...wow! What a wonderful surprise. We were having an oddly eclectic meal--we were fortunate to get 2 fresh Dungeness crabs, but had planned to be making a homemade pizza (gluten-free, herbed crust with goat-mozarella cheese, onions/bells/peppers/fresh basil/Olive oil, herbes de provence). Normally, I adore a Cab. But the crab and salad we were making seemed to call for something light--even white--and crisp, while the hearty 'za sauce we were stewing and thick/artisanal crust called for something both mellow and robust (a red). I decided to try the Crane Lake Pinot. It was a fabulous surprise, at any price, but I don't think I paid more than $15 for it, so it was stupendous--it had ripened perfectly. It burst with the freshness of a younger wine, but whet like a velvetier, heartier one. Complex, with "finishes" like an everlasting gobstopper--I kept thinking I'd tasted its finish (berry, pepper), and then it delivered yet another dimension. complemented the radicchio, ground pepper, basil, fennel (in the herbs de provence) and black olives marvelously. Hope to be able to find more of this! But the "Type" here says "sparkling wine????" Whaaat? Enjoy it if you can find it!
