What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Non-descript nose, but it was bright, softly fruity and had soft tannins. Nothing extraordinary here but it was simple and easy drinking.

For the price what an excellent wine for a dinner drink. Fruity and color was fine. I just didn't find opening the bottle easy to the fact that the cork is very cheap and broke off into the bottle. Other than that it was worth the price.

I picked up a bottle of this pinot noir for ONLY $2.50 a bottle. For the price, it was quite good with the BBQ steaks! Quality wise, I am no wine conoisseur or wine snob, but liked the fruity crisp flavor and it went well with the T-Bone and Porterhouse steaks that I grilled this summer. Would I buy it again? For $2.50 a bottle, sure! Is it any better than $25-50 wine? I saw little difference but then again I am not a wine snob.

I don't like to rate wine based on cost -- but it's hard not to comment that this wine is under $4 a bottle.

It's a great summer wine. Simple, mellow, light. I wouldn't serve this at a wine party, but would certainly serve it at a barbecue. It might make a great entry level wine for folks that only like wine coolers. :)

Would I still drink this wine? Yes. But, lets get to the review. It was a bright/watery wine when looking at the rim and the depth. The nose was very blowzy with way too much fruit (typical of this kind of wine.) It had a light body to it but with a coarseness that I wasn't expecting. Getting to the taste (this was my main reason for drinking the wine.) It had a hint of cherry to it and the acidity wasn't too strong but there. It finished poorly and the only way it lingered was by taking another sip right after the first one.

Like I said though... this is a wine I would drink again. It just isn't read more...
