Covey Run Riesling Washington Dry Riesling 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Riesling exudes pleasing aromas of green apples, peaches, and honeysuckle. Its sweetness and acidity are well balanced and lead to a medium-bodied finish. The combination of high natural acidity and residual sweetness gives the wine good body, flavor and intensity.

Named for the coveys of quail that patrol our prized vineyards in the Columbia Valley, Covey Run specializes in crafting award-winning Washington State wines. In fact, Covey Run wines have been awarded 20 “Best Value” awards by Wine Spectator, the world’s leading wine magazine. For 25 years, Covey Run wines have provided a perfect introduction to the vivid, delicious flavors of Washington State. Since 1982, Covey Run has crafted a broad range of award-winning wines – including 20 “Best Value” awards from Wine Spectator magazine – from prized vineyards in the renowned Columbia and Yakima Valley appellations of Eastern Washington State. Sheltered from storms by the rainshadow effect exerted by the majestic Cascade Mountain Range, conditions in these high desert regions are ideal for cultivating world-class wine grapes. Warm, sunny days and extended sunlight hours (due to Washington’s northern latitude) develop intense flavors in our classic European grape varieties, while cool nights ensure they retain high levels of acidity. Covey Run winemaker Kate Michaud transforms this pristine fruit into a broad range of consistently superior wines that embody Washington State’s unique characteristics while meeting and surpassing international standards of excellence. Kate crafts two tiers of outstanding Covey Run varietals: Quail Series and Columbia Valley Reserve. Quail Series provides discerning wine drinkers with high-quality Washington State wines for everyday enjoyment. They’re varietally distinctive, fruit-forward, easy-drinking and ideal for casual meals. Columbia Valley Reserve wines are hand-crafted from our finest lots of grapes and showcase lush, vivid fruit flavors balanced by bright natural acidity, with oak accenting rather than dominating the palate. They beautifully accompany a broad range of contemporary cuisines and are perfect for special-occasion dinners and other celebrations. The breadth of selection represented by our Quail Series and Columbia Valley Reserve varietals means there’s a delicious Covey Run wine for every occasion, from stylish entertaining to casual gatherings with family and friends. With great vineyards, a talented winemaker and a bevy of vividly flavored, beautifully structured wines, Covey Run truly offers the best of Washington State. Read less

Light straw hue with big nose of tropical fruit and lemon. Nice summer wine to drink on the patio. Tropical fruits, light acid dry Riesling.

Rating: 82/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Surprisingly developed and dull for a wine of its youth, this one has lost its fruity direction, and, instead of the vitality and fruit that we expect from Washington, it smacks of kerosene, wood glue and grapefruity bitterness.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. More sugary than fruity with its sweetness and acids never quite in sync, this edgy and uneven Riesling might be commendable as a poolside quaff except for the pushy, citrus-pith bitterness that comes on hard at the finish.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Fruity and generous, juicy with green apple, melon and mineral flavors that finish soft and gentle.

Ripe and forward with abundant melon, pineapple, and citrus flavors backed up by Riesling's dynamic duo of sweetness and acidity (the wine world's Ginger and Fred, Hepburn and Tracy, Brad and Jennifer... you get the picture). Nothing says summer like sipping Riesling while lounging in a heedlessly drifting rowboat. If you don't have a rowboat, this will have to do.

Light and slightly sweet, with pleasant apple and floral flavors that linger effectively. Drink now.
