A nice wine from Orin Swift. This is a blend of Zinfandel and a handful of other grapes. Had very nice undertones of earth and stone with some big fruit and a touch of residual sugar. Definitely a bold wine, and though we drank it without food, I suspect this would hold up well almost any type of beef. Again, not great but definitely not bad.

Ripe, wild, lush berries that linger & mix with oak & black tea accents. Bright acidity. Since this is a mix, there is more acidity than a normal zin, so don't be shy to pair with heavier meals. If anything one might err on going with light pairings, and get put off by acid.

You are amazing Mr. Prisoner. You are that boyfriend or girlfriend all single people seek to meet. You are deep, complex, and spicy hot. After one date with you, most wine, especially in your price range, just pale in comparison. Blackberry, spice and without fault you are guaranteed to be love at first sight for anyone lucky enough to spend around $30 odd dollars to take you home.

Orin Swift 11 The Prisoner

External Review
09/13/2013

This wine marks the official debut for the Prisoner Wine Company's winemaker Jen Beloz. Jen worked with Dave Phinney in the transition of the Prisoner and Saldo for the 2011 vintage and is responsible for the beautiful new upcoming 2012 vintage of Prisoner and Saldo on her own.

New 2012 vintage due end-October 2013!Napa Valley, CaliforniaOrin Swift The Prisoner is a must-try red wine gem from a gifted and fast-rising winemaker, Dave Phinney. Considering that Wine Spectator has selected The Prisoner to join the ranks of the magazine's Top 100 Wines of the Year not just in one recent year (#47 in 2009 for the 2007 vintage) but 3 times in the past 6 years, it is nearly inconceivable that Dave Phinney began his winemaking career with 2 tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes just a year out of college in 1998! He recently purchased 48 acres of land in the hills above Oakville and hopes one day to build a winery there. We can all look forward to enjoying the evolution of Orin Swift Cellars! The 2010 vintage received a 90-point rating from Wine Spectator. We expect an even higher score for this one, so don't wait!Orin Swift The Prisoner is 51% Zinfandel blended with 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Charbono and 1% Grenache. The wine is dark red, almost garnet hue with bright red on the rim. Aromas of Bingcherry, espresso, roasted fig and vanillin oak accents are persistent. The entry is powerful and generous supported with lively acidity while flavors of ripe raspberry, pomegranate and wild berry fruit linger harmoniously. It was aged in both new and seasoned French and American oak. The wine is soft and round with weight, length and structure and good acidity to soften its big fruit. On the finish it is long and lingering with soft, velvety tannins.Enjoy Orin Swift The Prisoner with roast pork, grilled chicken, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and cheeses.

Saturated ruby. Heady expansive aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur potpourri and incense with smoky Indian spices emerging with air. Juicy strikingly intense blackberry and blueberry flavors are complicated by notes of minerals and candied violet with a subtle peppery quality adding bite. Velvety tannins give shape to the extremely long spicy penetrating finish with the floral note echoing. This stunning palate-staining wine gets my vote as the best Chateauneuf of its vintage. S

This vintage has a deep ruby hue that is nearly opaque. The aromas elevate from the glass starting with black currant, dark blackberry, cherry, and cassis rounded out by subtle hints of seasoned French and American oak. The entry of the wine is massive and leads into a lush middle framed by bright acid and supple tannins. The finish is long, lingering and filled with soft velvety tannins lasting for nearly thirty seconds.

Only made in top vintages and a blend of roughly 60% (or more) Mourvedre and the rest a mix of other permitted varieties the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a cellar selection that always comes from the same plot of vines. A massive powerful wine with serious amounts of extract and concentration it slowly gives up gamey complex (and heavenly) notes of blueberry blackberry blood licorice garrigue and smoke. This flows to a full-bodied layered and brilliantly texture

Winemaker's Notes:
