Cotes du Rhone Saint-Esprit Delas 2007

This is the first of the extremely impressive 2007 Rhones. Delas is a producer well known for excellent Northern Rhone wines and they've taken a new approach to this Southern Rhone beauty. Instead of using mostly Grenache it is a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache. It shows intensity and character that goes well beyond its humble appellation. It is a well-balanced, well-made wine. It is towards the lighter side than medium and has a very abrupt finish that is a bit on the acidic side. The problem I have with this wine is that it doesn't compare well with a good Syrah nor does it compare well with a good Grenache. It is a new world wine and so might appeal more to American tastes than people used to more traditional Cotes-du-Rhones.

The Cotes-du-Rhone Saint Esprit is made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes, which come from a small village in the Ardeche region. The vineyard's southern exposure on steep granite hillsides provides the best growing conditions for the vines. The Cuvee Saint Esprit shows the strength and a pepper taste typical of the Syrah grape. The color is deep garnet red and has intense red berry aromas. It is an exceptional full-bodied wine with fine tannins. Black berries and cherries integrated with the right amount of spice along with a bit of minerally earth. It seemed a bit closed so it could benefit from two or three more years in the bottle. This wine is a great value and I intend to drink a lot more of it

This southern Rhone wine is made up of about 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache. I have to say, this wine is tasty and for a price of less than $10 it is one of the best buys I have had this year. This wine is loaded with black fruit, red berries and spice, a touch of oak, sweet tannins, creamy texture, and beautiful acidity culminating with a mouthwatering medium-length finish that makes your taste buds beg for a second taste. While not harsh at all it is powerful and I am curious what one more year will bring, but if you find this gem do not hesitate to "pop and pour".
