Coteaux du Layon Moulin Touchais 1997

External Review by Astor Wines & Spirits:

A wealth of aromas emanate from this still youthful Chenin Blanc. Honeyed beeswax mingle with pineapple and exotic flowers on the nose and palate. Savor the lingering caramel finish with soft blue cheeses or pastries made with frangipane.Touchais ages his wines for a minimum of ten years before release. Guard in the cellar at least 25 more years.

Moulin Touchais ages its wines for a minimum of ten years before release. However, because of the astonishing aging potential of these luscious and complex sweet wines, the 1996 is a mere child. Enjoy now or hold for a hundred years.

Decadent honeyed sweetness accompanies bright, green apple acidity in this elegantly balanced late-harvest Chenin Blanc. Possessed of compelling richness and texture, the wines of Moulin Touchais are all the more pure for their lack of botrytis.

Of the wines created by the Touchais family on their 145 ha of vineyards, the sweet Coteaux du Layon is perhaps the most iconic. Never one to follow trends, M.Touchais discovered as a happy accident after the devastation of WWII that his sweet wines just tasted better and decided to always allow them to mature for at least 10 years before release. They are far from ordinary and a testament to the adage, “Good things come to those who wait.” The gorgeous Chenin Blanc in this bottle has a fat nose filled with sweet caramel apples tinged with baking spice. On the palate, one finds golden, slightly dried apple balancing dark toffee and an intriguing earthiness. The butterscotch finish goes on and on… Exploit the versatility of sweet wines and pair with not just tarte tatin or blue veined cheese, but with apricot glazed poultry or sweet/ spicy tagines.

This sweet Chenin Blanc from the Loire is truly an exceptional find. Produced without botrytis, the wines of Moulin Touchais are thought to have the acidity necessary for them to be fresh after a hundred years in the cellar, which makes this 1971 practically a young wine!
