Costes de Beyrac Buzet 2014

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London's Kensington [www.nicolas.com ] for £8.50. It is from the Buzet appellation. This appellation was created in 1973 [although there has been winemaking here for many centuries ] for red, white and rose wines made from similar grape varieties as the Bordeaux appellation to the north, from 27 communes to the south of the Bordeaux region and south of the Garonne river between the towns of Marmande and Agen.My bottle was made by the Les Vignerons de Buzet co-operative which dominates production in the appellation and which was instrumental in getting appellation status in the first place. They were founded back in 1953 and now have nearly 200 growers. My bottle consists of 50% merlot,27%cabernet sauvignon and 23% cabernet franc.I started the bottle last night with my roast pork supper. At first,I thought it a little dry and austere but after a couple of hours it seemed to open up to reveal plenty of a blackcurrant, blackberry and plum style fruit. The tannins werre soft but it it is reasonably well structured. In short, this is an OK wine that went well with the pork..

Gascony is bordered by the Ocean, the Pyrenees and the Garonne. At the heart of this magical region, a river flows lazily through undulating hills that are home to the unique Buzet wine region. Here you'll find a people whose single passion is to make wine. A wine made with patience and intelligence. Above all, a wine that gives pleasure to the palate. It has been enjoyed by Man ever since he learned how to make wine in this land of benevolent sunshine. The soils, grape varieties and climate elegantly complement the skills of the winemakers in the twenty-seven communes in the appellation area. Nearby, the immense Landes forest brings its ocean scents to the delighted vine branches. Two thousand years of history have sculpted the land, up to the day in 1953 when Buzet's winemakers decided to join forces to give their win e the place it deserves in the range of wines produced in France. Twenty years later, they were awarded AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) status and have since been served in all the best restaurants in Europe. As a result of the talent of the winegrowers, the skills of the oenologists and cellar-masters and the magical nature of its soils, Buzet has become a truly great wine. Two thousand hectares of vineyards generously produce 13 million bottles for keen wine-lovers. The wine is made at two extraordinarily modern vinification sites. One is in Buzet, the other in Espiens, on both banks of the Baïse. There are also two ageing cellars, which house over 4500 barrels, gently instilling a thousand flavours into this great wine that over 120,000 visitors come and taste ever year at the winery and in the cellars. The Buzet Winemakers' winery has now become the Lot-et-Garonne department's most-visited tourist site. So why don't you come and join in the legend: come and taste the Buzet, come and enjoy it !
