What to Expect

Brunello di Montalcino is certainly one of the premier expressions of Sangiovese in all of Italy. Unlike other regions, such as Chianti, Brunello must be produced from 100% Sangiovese, in fact the particular clone referred to as Brunello. The vineyards of Brunello cover a large hillside and can be roughly divided into four regions, though things like age of vines and vinification techniques can easily mask the characteristics of each zone. Brunello is uusally a medium full-bodied wine with both strong acidity and tannins that support leathery, subtly spicy tones of coffee and tobacco that add depth to the classic plum and dark cherry fruits.

Winemakers Notes

When they drew up the definition for classic Brunello it was with Costanti in mind. One of Montalcino's most storied producers, Andrea Costanti makes wine with terroir, power and concentration. The 2001 is powerful, yet it does not dominate on the palate it has a light touch. It is concentrated, but not heavy, full of fruit but balanced clearly a wine capable of aging several decades. Several levels of fruit, earth and spice, a wine drinkable now yet will reward patient cellaring. One extra word if you ever see any of Andrea’s 1997 that is the wine of the vintage grab it and toss it in your cellar read more...

Reviews

The Costanti family has been part of the history of Montalcino since 1555. Currenlty, the estate is managed by Andrea Costanti, who has shown he is aware of international trends in wine. There are 25 acres under vine at between 1,300 to 1,480 feet on galestro soils typical of the area (shaly marls). The 2001 Brunello was given 3 years of aging divided equally between French and Slovenian oak casks. A big powerful Brunello that deserves to be cellared and will ahve a long life in the bottle.
