Corvo:
Corvo is a celebrated Sicilian wine produced in Casteldaccia, near Palermo. The name derives from a legend that a boistrous crow (“corvo” in Italian) was pestering the vineyard workers. A local monk who was said to have the ability to talk to animals took the crow to a cave where they negotiated an agreement: the crow would stay silent if his symbol would be used for the wine. Hence, the name and the black crow on the label. For many years, Corvo was one of the only table wines imported from Sicily. While that is no longer the case, it is still a popular brand. The signature rosso and bianco blends are expressions of the region’s starring varietals. For rosso: Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese and Pignatello (Perricone). For bianco: Inzolia and Grecanico. The winery also produces other reds, whites and a grappa.  Read less

Medium-bodied, with damson plum and crushed black cherry notes leading to spice and cedar on the finish. Nero drsquo;Avola. Drink now.

Has an herbal bouquet with cherry and tomato notes. Some sweet plum with accents of baking spices comes next. It starts better than it finishes; along the way a chewy, textured, coffee-laden character emerges.

Everyone recognizes the Corvo brand but few of us are familiar with the three indigenous grapes that make up this popular Sicilian blend: Nero drsquo;Avola, Nerello Mascalese and Pignatello. Together they offer cherry, blueberry, pomegranate and plum with a touch of minerality and soft tannins.

This Nero drsquo;Avola is simple, light and smooth, with aromatics of red fruits and leather. Plum and berry flavors are solid if unspectacular, while the finish offers integrated oak and vanilla. A correct, good-feel red for easygoing occasions.

This wine is produced from Nero drsquo;Avola grapes and aged for one year in Slovenian oak casks. The mellow flavor, accented with hints of spiciness, and great price recommend this as a good house wine. Enjoy with pizza, pasta, or potato chips!
