Light purple. Spicy cherry and dried berry aromas are complicated by fresh flowers and dark chocolate. Focused and firm, with bitter cherry and anise flavors and good grip on the end. Grown-up for this price point.
Bright purple color. Spicy redcurrant and wild strawberry on the nose, with subtle cracked pepper and baking spices adding complexity. Light in body but deep in sweet red berry preserve flavor, with no apparent tannins. Finishes crisp and incisive, with the red fruit notes repeating. This would be good with a light chill.
The 2005 Cortijo III Tinto is an unoaked cuvee of 100% Tempranillo. Medium ruby-colored, with a fruity cassis-scented nose, it delivers gobs of ripe, juicy, forward flavor in a hedonistic package.
The bright orange label is certainly eye catching and the fruit-driven, well-balanced style of this wine will open your eyes even wider. Made from 100% Tempranillo, Cortijo III is one of the greatest values from Rioja we have ever seen; this wine will make you a believer.
Bodegas Aldeanueva's 2004 Cortijo III Tinto (made from 100% Tempranillo) is a tank-fermented and aged Rioja that sells for a song. In fact, I cannot think of another Rioja at this price level that offers this much character and fruit. Its moderate ruby color is accompanied by a sweet nose of strawberries, cherries, spice box, dried herbs, and tobacco. With a lush texture, medium body, and no hard edges, it should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 1-2 years. This is an excellent bargain.
Typical of Rioja, this soft wine has a gamey touch of pleasant, ripe fruit and a well-balanced finish. It goes well with chicken, turkey, pasta, pizza and smoked salmon.
