Soft, dark and lightly minty with a tight, slow to open core of black fruit. That shows of flashes of subtle herbs coffee and sweet currant preserves. Cool and compact on entry with super balance and lovely flavors of black cherry preserves, tobacco, earth, baking spices and mocha tones. The finish is long and the tannins begin to become obvious but this is so well balanced and packed with fruit that it’s easy to see how this will evolve. Almost supple today this really expresses unusual finesse for a Howell mountain cab. 94pts

Very rich and dense. Subtle green rtones on the edge of the taste. Very nice warm oak notes: vanilla. Chocolate and intense liquorish on the finish. Anise on the nose.

Cabernet grapes for this powerful Napa Valley Cabernet were harvested from a hillside vineyard on the eastern slopes of Napa Valley on September 10, 2004. To create a particularly distinctive, complex wine, a blend of Clones 6 and 4 were co-fermented for 14 days on skins, and then aged in French oak barrels (70% new) for 22 months before bottling. Slightly more precocious than the Howell Mountain Cabernet bottling, the Napa Valley Cabernet shows very forward aromatics redolent of dark cherries and blackberries, with just the right notes of pipe tobacco and dark chocolate. Displaying a plush, velvety texture, the Cabernet shows its fresh, berry-driven appeal from start to finish. While youthful, bright and balanced for aging, the Napa Valley is vibrant in the glass, accessible and drinking very well now. 706 cases produced in 750ml formats. Months in barrel: 22 months
