Cornas "Chaillot" 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

"Franck Balthazar is the nephew of Noël Verset, the legendary Cornas producer, and he added a half hectare of vines to his own holdings from Monsieur Verset after his uncle’s retirement in 2004. The Chaillot from Franck Balthazar is a lovely bottle of Cornas, that hails from two parcels in the vineyard, ages forty-eight to ninety-seven years of age respectively. The 2006 Chaillot weighs in at a civilized and classy thirteen percent alcohol, and consequently offers up lovely purity, "cool" fruit tones and a lovely framing of acidity to give the wine freshness and bounce. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and elegant, with fine mid-palate depth, lovely focus and complexity, some firm tannins to resolve and fine length and grip on the palate-staining finish that closes with a classic note of "medicinal" syrah. Stylistically this is as very polished example of Cornas, with a winemaker’s signature that reminds me a bit of Alain Graillot’s wines in its modern cleanliness tied to a classic aromatic and flavor profile, and is a wine that I would be very happy to have in my cellar. Classy juice. 2012-2025+. 91+." John Gilman 11/08"Understated and precise, with sweet red and dark berry flavors, silky texture and slow-building tannins. A tangy note of redcurrant lingers on the long, clean finish. This wine displays the elegance of a top-notch Cote-Rotie. Balthazar raises his wine completely in demi-muids, none of them new, and bottles without fining or filtration...92." IWC 1/09
