What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

Winemakers Notes

Tempranillo

Editorial Reviews

Spicy and sweet smelling with notes of ginger, apricot and sassafras dominating at first then gaining complexity with hints of raw beef and vanilla accenting the cranberry fruit. This gains a rather distinctive note of mace and allspice berries with further airing. A bit flat on the attack but this is followed up by zesty, red apple acids, and lots of herbal and spicy background notes that are well knit into the plush texture The tannins are soft and add to the juicy appeal of the fruit which offers some tangerine and anonymous, dark red tones. Finishes cleanly with a touch of heat but not much complexity. 88pts

Reviews

Intensely floral nose, with peaches and grape juice - very unlike a typical red. Lighter bodied, a smooth, floral finish with blueberries and raspberries on the finish. Light, and ultra fruity.
