Core Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa Vineyard 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet blackberry fruit on the nose with some pencil lead, smoke, brownie, chocolate, game, and black pepper notes that gain an intense leather, show polish tone and spicy truffle nuances. Silken on the palate with wonderfully bright acidity and superb tannin that keep this tight and focused. Just slightly dense and chewy and certainly not fully open this has deep, rich fruit with notes of plum, black cherry, black currant and a hint of roasted pecan adding a savory edge. There are soft background notes of vanilla and bay leaf and a subtle menthol top note . Very zesty in the mouth and finishing with intense inner mouth perfume of violet pastille, cinnamon, mint, and licorice. A delicious wine with significant upside potential and the most penetratingly aromatic finish! 94pts

Dave Corey's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in Biology from San Jose State University and a master's degree in Entomology and Plant Physiology from Kansas State University, which was completed in 1995. Prior to entering the wine industry in 1996 , Dave worked in Salinas and the Central Valley in agricultural fields including cole crops, cotton, almonds, citrus, walnuts, kiwi, table grapes, apples and stone fruit. His first position in the wine industry was as a Pest Control Advisor with Cambria Winery and Vineyards and later at Kendall-Jackson Vineyards of Santa Barbara County. Dave left Kendall Jackson Vineyards in 1999 to begin Vital Vines, a viticultural company providing technical support for vineyard property owners, vineyard managers and wine-making personnel in the promotion of sustainable agriculture. He has worked with clients that include Laetitia, Barnwood, Beckman, Melville, Stolpman, Gainey, Zaca Mesa, Sea Smoke, Le Bon Climat, Sine Qua Non, Rideau, Carhartt, Rusack, Westerly, Fiddlestix, Vogelzang, Andrew Murray, Evergreen, Arita Hills and Royal Oaks. With a major commitment and a second mortgage, Dave slowly decreased his vineyard consulting work. He now focuses his full-time efforts on winemaking for CORE, the hands-on management of Alta Mesa Vineyard and facilitating the wine sales. Becky Corey began her interest in the wine industry while still attending high school in Temecula, California. She worked in the Culinary Department at Callaway Winery in addition to regular events for a local caterer specializing in winery functions. Next, she traveled to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for a B.S. in Agricultural Business and a concentration in Marketing. Working for a small local restaurant, catering companies, and a wine shop during college were valuable connections to the enjoyment of food and wine. She was one of the first students to participate in the Cal Poly Wine Marketing Certificate program. This exposure to Central Coast wineries eventually landed her a job at Byron Winery in the Santa Maria Valley where she worked for rune years in multiple areas. In May of 2002, Becky accepted a position at Laetitia Vineyard & Winery in Arroyo Grande as Director of Public Relations where she remained for 2 and a half years. Next, she pursued a consulting business specializing in winery hospitality and visitor programs while easing into a full-time workload for CORE. This includes much of the accounting, compliance, sales and marketing aspects of the two person operation. Her most significant contribution to CORE has been in the label design, including the use of her original artwork. She also holds the prestigious title of "Employee of the Month". Read less

Deep purple straight to the rim. Blackberry and plum reveal themselves on the nose along with bright notes of mint and wild herbs and a touch cedar. Beautifully textured on the palate the tannins are supple and nicely integrated offering nice balance and structure. With a touch of chocolate adding complexity on the finish this is a very well-made wine showing wonderfully right now. Alex Shaw.

"The brilliant 2006 Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa vineyard exhibits notes of creme de cassis, kirsch, blueberries, licorice, and truffles. full-bodied, powerful, and silky-textured, it is stunningly complex with notes of flowers, red and black fruits, earth, and spice. rich, layered, full-bodied, and built like a skyscraper, this beauty should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years. These are all creative, individualistic wines that reveal considerable soul and character. One has to admire the wacky art on the label as well as the non-conformist blends. Most important from a consumer’s perspective, the wines are very interesting and deliver loads of pleasure. All of them possess terrific aromatics." ~Robert Parker's wine Advocate #172

"The 2005 Mister Moreved Alta Mesa vineyard exhibits a blueberry, raspberry, truffle oil-filled personality, wonderful ripeness, medium to full body, good acidity, and a dry, heady, firm finish. It is another stunning effort to consume over the next 5-6 years. These are all creative, individualistic wines that reveal considerable soul and character.
