This really was singing with a great nose of porcini, pine bark, deep ripe fruits, and insinuated tar and floral notes. In the mouth this managed the trick of mature nebbiolo with it's round plush texture that remained cool and crisp nonetheless. The only knock on the wine could be that in the mouth it was somewhat monotone but the texture and length made for compelling drinking.

Dusty, meaty and slow to open with a fair touch of dried herb and seaweed up front but slowly the candied black raspberry tones grow and flesh out a frame of mossy greenness, beef bouillon and a lovely mint nuance. The entry is brightly acidic and leads to a slightly spicy mid-palate rich with red fruits and a touch of pink peppercorn. The finish is long and has a savory edge that plays against the sweetness. Perhaps a touch simple in the mouth but rich and delicious. 2009- 2015 91pts

    This bottle was popped and carefully poured immediately with a small amount decanted to remove sediment at the end. The color faded from red to amber and into an orange rim. On the nose, at first I found leather, green stems, cedar and dried flowers but as the wine opened it became more and more fragrant as cinnamon, coca and dried cherries became prominent. It was a dream to sit and enjoy the bouquet alone. The palate was balanced and perfectly resolved, feeling like silk across the tongue with flavors of red fruit, mulling spices and herbal tea. It was so vibrant and fresh for such an old bottle of wine. The finish showed dried cranberry and lasted half a minute. This was an experience that I’ll remember for a long time.

    The 2007 Barolo Monfalletto is another superb-entry-level Barolo. The essences of crushed flowers, spices, roses and tobacco come together beautifully in this mid-weight, refined Barolo. The Monfalletto shows wonderful mid-palate density and fabulous overall balance in a pure style that recalls some of the great past vintages here.
