Coppola Directors Cut Cab Sav 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

We chose to make a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon rather than blend in other varietals so that we could create a real terroir wine that demonstrates true varietal character. Our 2006 Director’s Cut Cabernet offers a rich perfume of plums, cherries, wild berries and cedar as well as dark, decadent flavors of blueberries, cassis, cocoa and spice. This vintage experienced a 20% reduction in crop yield. Having less fruit automatically enables the grapes to develop more concentration, which is exactly what happened here. Not only are the wine’s tannins sweet and mature from the extended growing season, the flavors are ripe, lush and prolonged on the finish because of the fruit’s immense concentration. This wine will drink well now while young, but it also has the structure to develop even more complexity in years to come. Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Regimen: 24 months using 60% new French oak, 40% 1-2 year old French oak 14.4% alcohol Released August 2008.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

Lots of dark fruit with nice tannins. Very well balanced with a big nose and long finish. Really opens up after an hour in the decanter.

One of my favorite sipping wines. Not to heavy on any single flavor but just enough punch to let you know it is there. Light enough on the tannin to avoid the headache, if you have that tendancy but still rich.

Very recommended especially if you are harassed with choices of expensive French wines and you set your sight on this in the wine list. Very reasonable but will give you the same taste of extravagance the old world windes provide.

Okay. The type of wine I would have liked when I didn't know much about wine. Nothing special. Nothing offensive. Maybe a little acidic.

Lovely little steak wine, tasted perfect with Filet Mignonm, beat the pants off the Mondavi Meritage for the same price. Best qualities, soft tannins, smooth body, and dark red fruits!

A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2005 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml

External Review

The Coppola Diamond Merlot combines fruit from Napa, Sonoma, and Monterey. The flavors and textures unique to each region harmonize beautifully together to create a wine that has dark, succulent fruit balanced by natural acidity. Intense aromatics of raspberry and blueberry lead to flavors of crushed berries, vanilla, and leather, which are wrapped up in a soft, smooth tannin structure.TASTING PROFILE-Appearance Dark purple-redAromas Cherries, blueberries, dark chocolateFlavors Plums, blackberries, currants, vanilla
