Coppo Barbera d'Asti Avvocata 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very fruity on the nose and spicy with softly herbal and dried spice notes framing gentle and dusty red berry fruit. A bit chewy early on the palate and with plenty of acidity, this is moderately tannic and has a bit of an stringent nature to it. There’s a slightly jammy quality to the red fruit on the palate, and through the long and slightly warm finish. This is simple and a bit raw in the mouth, but certainly a great example of typically zesty Barbera. 87pts

The Coppo family history intertwines with the development of the City of Canelli, which in the early 1900s had already established itself as the Capital of Italy’s famous sweet sparkling wine Moscato (Muscat). The region was also rich in Barbera, but the family followed the trail of sweet bubbles for a little over a century and consolidated. Thus it is under the auspices of Moscato that at the turn of the century, founder Piero Coppo begins producing sweet sparkling wines that become a distinctive mark of ‘made in Italy’ long before Anglo-Saxon custom coined the phrase. The evolution of sweet sparkling wines into drier wines or brut pinot noir based offerings was obvious, as was the need to measure up the Barbera to the big reds from Monferrato and Langa. The company flourishes and becomes solid as the elegant family mansion in the heart of the city testifies, with its long series of cellars tunneled out of the hillside that reveal the different geological layers of various epochs. Piero is succeeded by his son Luigi, who enlarges the family business equipping it with the instruments and facilities needed to compete in a difficult but growing post-war market. Luigi then passes on to his four sons: Piero (named after the founder), Gianni, Paolo and Roberto a philosophy of life and production, a spirit that can be felt in the vineyards they’ve inherited and from which today’s wines are brought to life. Fresh and wonderfully textured in the mouth with cool flavors of raspberry and wild cherry with a hint of mulberry. The acidity here is bright and fresh but well integrated with the fruit. There are fine-grained tannins adding a little extra cut to the palate. The purity of the fruit here is lovely and the finish is long and very precise with a strong mineral vein adding a nice, almost medicinal tone to the fruit. Excellent persistence and balance make this a winner. 88pts

The 2007 Barbera drsquo;Asti Lrsquo;Avvocata is just plain delicious. This cask-aged Barbera impresses for the clarity and fragrance of its ripe fruit as well as for its impeccable balance. It is a gem, especially at this price. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2013.

Bright, deep red. Sappy, primary aromas of crushed red fruits complicated by licorice and violet. A supple, sweet fruit bomb offering moderate complexity but lovely freshness to its fresh berry and cherry flavors. The lingering finish shows firm acidity and light tannins. Very clean and easygoing wine.
