- Copain Syrah L'Hiver Mendocino A nose showing big fruit; tarry black cherry and berry. The palate shows smooth brambly blueberry, cassis, violet and dark cherry. This Syrah is an excellent value for the price and should be one of those staple wines to always have on hand.

- When I told the waiter I was underwhelmed by the wine, he got a bit snooty and told me it was made by the most influential wine maker in California and that I'd need to "work hard for it." Whatever. I found it overly fruit forward and too strongly acidic to fully enjoy. The promised "cascade of flavors" did not materialize. I don't think I will try it again.
