Copain Tous Ensemble Pinot Noir 2016

Member Review by shsim:

This stop at Copain was part of a Russian River trip! This was an interesting blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Light in body, this had notes of raspberry, although it was more spice than fruit. Good crisp acid but it just did not fit very well with me. For more on the tasting, please visit http://dionyshius.blogspot.com/2012/07/russian-river-copain.html

All of the great Domains that inspired us to make wine are fervent believers that great wine begins in the vineyard. As winemakers we are just custodians of that fruit allowing for the reflection of the site, varietal and vintage. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character. The selected terroirs we source from are, in our belief, capable of expressing the truest varietal character interwoven with site characteristics and ultimately the vintage nuances. Further enhancing this expression is our belief in organic farming practices which allows the natural balance of flora and fauna inherent in each site to impact the developing vine, fruit and finally the wine. Winemaking practices aim to express each sites unique qualities which thereby means a minimum of intervention. Overripe fruit, excessive physical and chemical manipulation of the must and over use of oak, all mask the subtleties provided by the vineyard. The terroirs chosen will be highlighted by keeping alcohol percentages lower, retaining natural vibrant acidity, gently handling the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak. Adhering to these principals will not only allow for the true expression of each vineyard but make for a more compatible and harmonious accompaniment when dining. Read less

Not a particularly well-balanced wine but very interesting and positive for the price. Delicate but assertive, the nose has some funk and leathery aspects that contrast with the juicy mouth feel. Not overly-fruity but juicy with some tart notes. Finishes where it started with oak and vanilla. Quite a ride!

Sourced from Wells Guthrie's top single-vineyard sources in Mendocino County, this is made from a saignee of mostly Pinot Noir with a small amount of Syrah. The wine is bled off the skins of the pinot and syrah at different times during cold soak once appropriate color has been achieved. It is then fermented in neutral barrels using alternative yeasts and undergoes malolactic fermentation naturally. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered. An elegant rose with flavors of fresh red berries and lively acidity, begging for the foods of summer.

Copain's "Tous Ensemble" wines, which translates from the French as "all together" are appellation cuvees. This, the second vintage, combines fruit from three Anderson Valley vineyards - Cerise, Monument Tree and Wentzel - and is even better than the first. The distinctive vineyards come together in harmony here, with pure sour cherry fruit on the nose and tannins. Aromas and flavors of grilled bread, English Breakfast tea and freshly-tilled soil add intrigue, while the chalk-like tannins and bright acidity keep everything focused and in tune. Like the 2006, this wine is approachable in its youthful exuberance, but it should continue to evolve into a beautiful sonata of a wine over the next five years.
