Eaglepoint Ranch Winery is a partnership between sparkling-wine pioneer and chocolate-maker John Scharffenberger, and viticulturist Casey Hartlip. Using grapes grown exclusively from the Scharffenberger family's Eaglepoint Ranch, they have combined their efforts to produce some of California's finest red wines. John Scharffenberger's passion for farming and fine wines began at an early age. Always a student of nature and horticulture, he created his own major in bio-geography at UC Berkeley, with a minor in range management. Weekends were spent in the Napa and Sonoma wine country. After summer trips to Europe, he knew his future would be in grape growing. In 1973, he and his family purchased Eaglepoint Ranch, with the first plantings of Zinfandel coming in 1975. With most of the vineyard planted and up and running, John turned his attention to wine. In 1981, one of California's elite sparkling wineries opened its doors. Scharffenberger Cellars became a 15-year adventure where John's skill, vision and dedication were proven year after year. Always looking for a new challenge, in the fall of 1996 John created Scharffen-Berger Chocolate Maker. Using vintage European equipment and unique varieties of Central American cacao beans, the production of fine bittersweet chocolate was soon underway. Today, the Scharffen-Berger factory in Berkeley produces what is widely considered some of America's greatest chocolate. A lifelong resident of Mendocino County, Casey Hartlip's first harvest at Eaglepoint was 1977. Splitting his time between summer firefighting and winter farming, he began year-round duties by 1979. For the next few years, he and John worked together and John's philosophies on farming and range management became second nature to Casey. Throughout the early '80s, Casey's farming abilities matured as the ranch reached full production. Today, Casey is respected as one of the most accomplished grape growers from California's vast North Coast region. He has overseen the continual improvement and expansion of the vineyards at Eaglepoint Ranch, grafting over several blocks and developing others from scratch. His intimate knowledge of every rise and dip in the land, every nuance of soil composition, every shift in aspect, has made each new block a success. But growing fine grapes is only part of his passion-as an outdoorsman Casey has a deep love and respect for the land he oversees. For that reason, all of the farming at Eaglepoint is done with an eye toward improving the health of the entire ecosystem. As a winemaker, Casey made his first barrel of homemade Zinfandel in 1990, beginning an obsession with red wines that continues today. Over the years his primary focus has shifted, however, from Zinfandel to the Rhone varieties, particularly Syrah. Read less
