Contucci Rosso di Montepulciano 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky and stony on the nose with a Gaves like sternness. There’s a lovely core of blackberry fruit and rich leather and spice tones. On the palate this exhibits rich, sweet red frutti del bosco character with super fine tannins and integrated acidity giving this a lush, seamless, crowd-pleasing mouthfeel. There are plenty of nuanced leather, spice and apply acid tones to add detail to the core of fruit and a hint of honeycomb and flowers on the tight, focused finish. An all around winner of a wine. 92pts

Ottaviano became the commander of Cosimo's army and died gloriously on 5th December 1594. In the 17th century it is worth remembering Giulio, doctor of civil and church rights at Pisa University; Arcangiolo commander of the army of the Grand Duke Ferdinando II; Gregorio, who, besides being Standard Bearer in 1612, was also "Alfiere delle Corazze" of Christina of Lorena. In 1700 the jesuit Contuccio was rector of the Study of Rethoric and responsable for the Kircheriano Museum in Rome. Read less

Deep and musky on the nose with a lovely gamy edge and earthy spice notes framing dark berry fruit. In the mouth this is a gentle giant with deep strawberry fruit on entry backed with subtle herb tones and a nice spicy overlay. The tannins are somewhat prominent with a strawberry seed astringency and mineral edge to the elegant and fairly long finish. This will benefit from a few years in the cellar. 91pts
