Continuum 2014

Member Review by davine1:

An outstanding wine reminiscent of the 1979 Robert Mondavi Reserve. Layers of fruit with good tannins assuring a long life. I would recommend using a Vinturi as this brings out the luscious fruit notes.

All great wines begin with a great sine. From our early days in St. Helena to our father Roberts’s establishment of his winery in Oakville, my family has recognized due importance of this; Continuum takes the next step. Continuum had to be a hillside site, on the east side of the valley with a westerly aspect. Continuum also needed the right soil; volcanic, iron rich soils no grow wins with great structure, focus and agebillty. Four generations and a lifetime of experience brought us to this estate on Pritchard Hill where the perfect combination of soils, exposure and climate are present to grow wine in the company of the world’s finest. A Pauillac-like expression of fresh-cut flowers, gravelly tannins and rich, graphite-laced currant and dark berry flavors. The tannins flex their sinewy strength, leading to a gutsy melted black licorice accent on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030. 3,000 cases made.

Ripe, silky tannins wrap around the palate in the 2012 Continuum. Bright red cherry, plum, spice, menthol and hard candy meld together effortlessly in the glass. The 2012 captures the polished, refined side of the vintage. This is perhaps the most refined wine I have ever tasted from Continuum. The flavors are bright and focused, while the new oak has been decidedly toned down, both of which allow the personality of these breathtaking hillsides sites to shine. The 2012 is the first Continuum to be made entirely with estate grown fruit.

Full ruby-red. Sexy, slightly liqueur-like aromas of currant, plum syrup, licorice, menthol and iron. Spicy and energetic but with a soft, creamy middle giving the wine considerable early appeal. Not a hugely fleshy or structured cabernet but offers lovely restrained sweetness and inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with building, slightly tough mountain tannins that call for four or five years of patience.

Another strong effort by Tim Mondavi from this relatively new project on Pritchard Hill, the 2011 Continuum’s final blend was 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. Harvested late, between October 17 and November 3, it spent 19 months in 85% new French oak. The wine’s impressive deep ruby/plum/purple color is followed by notes of blackcurrants, black cherries and spring flowers. Like most 2011s, it has evolved early, but it is a medium to full-bodied beauty that represents one of the most successful wines of the vintage. Drink it now and over the next 12–16 years.

This rich, harmonious, supple-textured wine shows the potential of 2011, with dense dark berry, dried herb, mocha, cedar and tobacco leaf notes. Ends up dry and tannic, with a push of ripe fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2024.

This classic Napa Valley blend — the majority Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by 12% Petit Verdot (quite noticeable in the wine), 11% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot — is made from grapes grown on volcanic soils. Needing a decant or many years in cellar, it is savory and dusty in coffee and Mediterranean spice, the fruit predominantly blackberry and plum and the tannins supple but not yet smooth.

Bright ruby-red. High-pitched aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice pastille and violet. Round, suave and lush but with lovely inner-mouth lift to the cassis and chocolate flavors. Serious depth here, and quite ripe for 2010. Finishes seamless, ... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 2010 Continuum 750ml
