What to Expect

Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Winemakers Notes

Deep red. Pungently spicy aromas of
red fruits and minerals. Sweet, lush, deep and
harmonious; already revealing compelling
inner-mouth perfume. Very sweet and very
long, with a palate-cleansing, sappy aftertaste.
Tannins are thoroughly buffered by fruit. A
great showing.

RP: 95 xxxx The estates Barolo Sori Ginestra is the wine it is most famous for and the 2001 has been full of promise since I first tasted it from barrel in March 2004. The darkest of the three wines, it displays a classic Ginestra nose of menthol, pine, underbrush, spices and minerals. This superbly balanced and refined Barolo offers intense dark cherry fruit, with tremendous substance and persistence. Notes of tar and menthol become more pronounced as the wine sits in the glass. This is the highest-scoring Barolo yet from the 2001 vintage and comes from partners Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino. They own a stake in the 37-acre Ginestra vineyard, located near the town of Monforte d'Alba in the heart of Barolo country. Ginestra shone in the 2001 vintage, producing a number of outstanding Barolos, but none more impressive than this. 1,370 cases made.
