Conterno Fantino Barbera d'Alba Vignota 2006
Tasting Notes : Deep red-ruby. Dark berries, black cherry, licorice, espresso and bitter chocolate on the youthfully reticent nose. Superconcentrated, dense and sweet, boasting a chewy, layered texture for young barbera and captivating flavors of crunchy dark berries, licorice and minerals. Bright acids leaven the wine's superb sweetness and extend the finish. The dolcetto is done entirely in stainless steel but this barbera was aged for ten months in second-use barriques.
The making of high quality vine begin with the grapes. The work carried out in the vineyard ends with the harvest, and the winery takes over.
I just had this wine sitting at a nice hotel bar where they actually (gasp), didn't overprice their wines. Very drinkable as a cocktail all by itself. Wonderful nose, lucious black fruits, hint of minerality with bright acidity and a medium finish. Needed to open up a bit, decanting really helped. Great conversation wine.
