Our 1996 Oakville District Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the great climate and soils that surround our winery in the geographic center of Napa Valley. Complex and muscular, this wine captures the unique characteristics of the region with deep layers of cassis and wild berries interwoven with nuances of cedar, vanillin and spice. The Oakville District has been the cradle of great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons for over 120 years.
Brownish inky color. Reserved nose, with medicinal and herbal notes. VELVET texture! Insane balance - huge, but so silky. Low tannins and acid. Long+. Juicy. Refined. Vanilla. Light smoke. Charming! Was decanted. My favorite wine to date.

Bright ruby-red. Complex, sweet nose combines black cherry, blackcurrant, gravel, licorice and graphite. Silky, minerally and sweet, with terrific intensity and thrust, not to mention inner-mouth energy. Finishes with a firm spine of ripe tannins and very persistent, mouthcoating fruits and minerals. This is a full 15.3% alcohol but I never would have guessed it. Interestingly, associate winemaker Gonzalez told me he particularly likes the power of the 2003 reds here, "especially in their youth." But this has real verve.
Sleek, elegant and polished. A refined yet rich and complex effort, with a mix of mint, currant, bay leaf, sage and dusty berry flavors. Firms up on the finish, where the tannins are firm yet supple and integrated. Best from 2009 through 2015.
Weaves together a complex array of ripe, rich currant, anise, smoky oak and black cherry. Dense, concentrated and persistent, with great depth and focus, ending with an amazingly long, richly flavored finish. Best from 2008 through 2018.
The finest Private Reserve since the 1991, 1990, and 1987, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is extraordinary. There are 8,000 cases of the blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and small dollops of Merlot as well as Petit Verdot. A perfume of smoke, camphor, creme de cassis, cedar, and fruitcake is accompanied by a gentle giant of a wine. Powerful and impeccably balanced, with outstanding concentration, well-integrated wood, acidity, and tannin, and a long, nearly 60-second finish, this saturated ruby-purple-hued effort is a prodigious example of Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: now-2020+.
The dense ruby/purple-hued 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve's big, sweet nose reveals aromas of crème de cassis, licorice, cedar, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, restrained, and made in a distinctively Bordeaux style, it possesses admirable purity, texture, and length. It is delicate and poised as opposed to flamboyant, and should age easily for 15-18 years.
Good full ruby. Explosive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, minerals and tobacco. Deep, brooding cabernet with terrific sweetness of fruit and depth. Complicating mineral and tobacco notes. Finishes with huge tannins that avoid hardness. Offers very strong potential, but this is an infant today.
Good saturated ruby-red. Sexy aromas of cassis, raspberry, tobacco leaf, cigar box and nutty oak (100% new). A step up in concentration and flesh from the appellation wines but not at all a blockbuster in the context of Oakville wine (this is 81% from To-Kalon fruit). Fat, mouthfilling and deep but quite closed today, with its serious tannic structure apparent. I picked up a very ripe note of almost honeyed tobacco as well as a floral high tone, a medicinal element and a leafy hint. This long and classy wine needs time to harmonize in the bottle and may ultimately merit a higher rating. These 2005s are carrying alcohol in the high 14s, noted winemaker Janssens, but the To-Kalon Vineyard generally produces fruit with pHs in the 3.6 range, which is on the low side for ripe cabernet from Napa Valley.
