Connetable Talbot St. Julien 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Abundant amounts of sweet, up-front fruit give this wine a precocious appeal compared to many of its brethren. It exhibits a dense plum/ruby/purple hue along with sweet boysenberry, black currant, cherry, smoke and licorice aromas and flavors. This deep, medium to full-bodied, classic Talbot should be approachable when released, and age effortlessly for 15 or more years...91-93" WA 05/11 "This super focused and firm, with a bright and intense fruit. Full and super silky, with a long, long finish. Super straight and beautiful. This is better in 2010...92-93" JS 04/11 "Plump and rather open, with delicious plum, raspberry and black cherry fruit melded with spice and anise. This has a nice chocolaty finish, with a velvety feel...90-93 (BT)" WS Web Only 2011

Château Talbot is a Grand Cru Classé (Fourth Growth, Quatrième Cru) in Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, France. The estate was founded in the 15th century by Connétable John Talbot, English soldier and governor of Guyenne, who was defeated in the 1453 Battle of Castillon. It eventually fell into the hands of the Marquis of Aux, which lasted several decades before acquisition by Désiré Cordier in 1917. It was his son, Georges and his grandson, Jean, who propelled the estate to earn the reputation it achieved as one of the top wines of the Médoc in the later part of the 20th century. Jean Cordier’s daughter, Nancy Bignon Cordier and her husband, Jean-Paul Bignon, currently oversee production.    The vineyard area covers 102 hectares, with the majority devoted to red grape cultivation from vines averaging 42 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant varietal, followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot. The whites (Caillou Blanc) are 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. In addition to Château Talbot, which represents nearly 60% of its production, the estate also produces Connétable Talbot as their second wine.  Read less

This features a fairly plump core of crushed plum, blackberry and mulled boysenberry notes, coated with tar and driven by a strong graphite accent. An echo of pastis lingers on the finish, displaying good latent grip. Best from 2015 through 2027.

One of the best Talbots over recent years, and possibly the best since the 1986 and 1982, this sexy juggernaut of a wine struts forth with an opaque plum/ruby/purple color and terrific notes of creme de cassis, licorice, roasted herbs and smoky barbecue. It is a brilliant effort, with full body, wonderful fruit, a savory, expansive mouthfeel, sensational texture and a long finish, but no hardness or astringency. This is a fabulous Talbot to drink over the next 20–25 years.
