Ruby-red. Musky aromas of berry skin and cherry, with complicating notes of dried flowers and herbs. Firm on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering sweet red fruit flavors and a subtle peppery quality. Sweeter on the anise-tinged finish, where the cherry element lingers with good intensity. This will be drinking well soon, or could even be enjoyed now with a little aeration.
Inky violet. Perfumed, pure red and dark berry aromas are brightened by zesty minerality. Taut, youthfully firm raspberry and bitter cherry flavors offer excellent cut and thrust. Finishes with suave tannins and outstanding persistence. Impressively balanced and much more about delicacy and insinuation than power. An understated, elegant wine that really clings to the palate.
This traditional-style red has a strong earthy note, but matches it with ripe plum, coffee and tobacco flavors. It has remarkable concentration; muscular tannins need food for balance.
Lush, modern red. Toast and vanilla flavors wrap around blackberry and plum flavors, supported by ripe, full tannins and a generous texture. It's balanced and lively. Best from 2004 through 2010.
An ambitious tinto fino, this is red-fruited as ripe roriz (the variety's name further down the river in Portugal's Douro). It's also showing substantial oak, especially in the smoky, bacony aroma. This seems pushed to a Port-like ripeness and hasn't yet fleshed out to carry all that ripeness. Age it to allow the fruit to mellow as it absorbs some of the oak.
Bright ruby-red. Superripe but fresh aromas of black cherry and exotic dried red fruits. Supple, suave and fairly deep, with generous flavors of dark cherry, currant and raspberry confit; jammy but not stewy. In the very ripe style of this hot year without losing its balance. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, smooth tannins.
This red packs a lot of flavor on a supple frame. Black cherry, blackberry, smoke, mineral and espresso notes show focus and depth, backed by firm but well-integrated tannins that dissolve on a finely etched, floral-scented finish. Drink now through 2018.
