Funky and leathery, and with a bit of ass in the glass this smells great. Sure it’s going to be a polarizing wine but life would suck without wines that smell like this in the mix. There’s surprising freshness here as well with smoke and coffee accents framing a core of spicy blackberry and almost strawberry toned fruit that picks up hints of chinese five spice and soy in the glass. Medium light bodied on entry, light and elegant in the mouth. The tannins here have melted away but this remains fresh and surprisingly pretty in the mouth with lovely bitter, wild cherry accented fruit that shows a bit of a beefy edge. The tannins do build in the mouth, nicely balanced by tart acids that bring out the sour plumy fruit on the palate. The finish is driven by ink and mineral flavors with a hint of wild blueberry on the finale. This is at early peak and is delicious today, having retained tons of fresh fruit and gained nuance and textural harmony with age. It’s a surprisingly delicate and somewhat refined Ribera, though it retains the powerful tannins these wines are known for. 90pts

Alejandro Fernández discovered an abandoned hillside on the banks of the River Duero in the mid-1980s that seemed to bring together the ideal conditions to become one of the best vineyards of the region. It had a gentle southern-facing slope that ended in the river and different soils composed of gravel, clay and gypsum that promised to produce the nuances needed to create complex wines from Tempranillo grapes. Thus began an arduous three-year period of negotiations destined to purchase the small individual allotments that made up the hillside. The first 80 hectares were finally planted in 1989. Today the property, which is named after the nearby town of Haza, has a continuous covering of almost 200 hectares of excellent Tempranillo vines. Although small amounts of wine were produced in 1993, the 1994 vintage was the first that underwent full-scale commercialisation. Both vintages were mainly produced in the Pesquera facilities. It was only from 1995 that Condado de Haza became the “Château” Alejandro Fernández had dreamed of. Condado de Haza is another Alejandro Fernandez (of Pesquera fame) property also located in Ribera del Duero. Purple-colored, it offers up fragrant aromas of cedar, tobacco, black currants and blackberry. There is a supple mouth-feel and generous cherry and black fruit flavors and enough ripe tannins to ensure good longevity. Drink this hedonistic effort now and over the next 10-12 years. WS

The 2008 Crianza is purple-colored with an attractive bouquet of cedar, mineral, earth notes, espresso, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with ample ripe fruit, a firm structure, good depth, and plenty of flavor.Consume with lamb and suckling pig roasts, lamb chops cooked over vine cutting, semi cured goat cheeses, and oven raosted fowl. The 2001 Tinto, which is aged 15 months in American oak (most of it new), exhibits a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a rich perfume of graphite intermixed with blackberries, black currants, and flowers. Full-bodied, elegant, rich and pure, with loads of fruit, abundant glycerin, and a long, concentrated finish, it is still unevolved and primary, but reveals tremendous potential.

This balanced red marries sweet, toasty oak and ripe plum and blackberry flavors in a muscular yet luscious texture. The long finish echoes with black fruit and spices. Best from 2003 through 2010.

An ambitious tinto fino, this is red-fruited as ripe roriz (the variety's name further down the river in Portugal's Douro). It's also showing substantial oak, especially in the smoky, bacony aroma. This seems pushed to a Port-like ripeness and hasn't yet fleshed out to carry all that ripeness. Age it to allow the fruit to mellow as it absorbs some of the oak.

Condado de Haza, part of the Pesquera group, focuses its production on a hillside vineyard of gravel and limestone, planted towards the end of the 1980s by Alejandro Fernandaacute;ndez. The vines tend to give wines of great concentration and aging potential andmdash; like this intense tempranillo with mineral aromas and surprisingly fresh cherry scents. The delicious fruit bathes in tannins as firm as steel. Give this five years in the cellar for that structure to mellow.

Bright ruby-red. Superripe but fresh aromas of black cherry and exotic dried red fruits. Supple, suave and fairly deep, with generous flavors of dark cherry, currant and raspberry confit; jammy but not stewy. In the very ripe style of this hot year without losing its balance. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, smooth tannins.

Lush, modern red. Toast and vanilla flavors wrap around blackberry and plum flavors, supported by ripe, full tannins and a generous texture. Itrsquo;s balanced and lively. Best from 2004 through 2010.
